Need hotel suggestions for Boston...

Taking the family for a few days to see Boston. I am looking for a hotel in a good location. I know i won't find cheap, but can someone recommend a moderately priced, decent hotel?

Thanks

Hi, Kristen. Fancy meeting you on this forum! I usually only drive over to Boston, as we live in western Mass, but the Fairmont Copley is in a great location and you can usually find deals on hotels.com for it. Whenever my husband has to stay over in Boston he tries to get a room there. The public areas are very nice, the rooms are pretty generic. There are lots of smaller, hipper hotels in the area, too. Just depends on what you want to be within walking distance of and how many ameneties you want to have. Lots of folks like Marriott next to the Aquarium for its convenience and its views of the harbor. My husband stayed there last year with one of his grandkids on a club level, which provided breakfast, snacks throughout the day, and cocktails at night. (Every time a grandchild turns six, he takes her on an overnight trip to Boston, just the two of them. They all love it!)

Lots of families stay at the Sheraton Prudential as there is a pool that has a retractable roof, its connected to a mall that has a food court and its located in the Back Bay so its convenient to many attractions.

I stayed one night there in August. We got the room through Hotwire for $97 and was assigned a less than satisfactory room. I do know that there are many nice rooms there - we just got a bad lot.

Kids might like Hotel at MIT. Greeted by robots in the lobby. Walking distance to lots of restaurants and the "T".

Bennnie, I also stayed at the Sheraton in Back Bay too on a Hotwire stay. I'm sorry you got an inferior room.

I went just after New Year which I assume is a very quiet time but I didn't feel like I got treated any differently because I'd booked through Hotwire. I asked for a room with two beds which they didn't give me first time but I went back to reception and they swapped us to another room with no trouble at all.

Dave - it was no big deal, we were only there for 1 night and were hardly in the room. But I definately prefer the Back Bay Hilton. We've gotten really good prices off their own internet site.

Kristen1206 - Back Bay Hilton is another good choice for a family as they also have an indoor pool. The Colonade is nice also. I love the restaurant there Brasserie Jo as do my 8yo and 11yo daughters. Also loved the rubby ducky by the bathtub! but the pool is a roof top pool and therefore only open in the summer. Not sure when your trip is.

Don't book anything listed in Revere, Chelsea or East Boston. Not conveniently located unless you want to be on a highway by the airport.

While I read this trip is not for a year, check your dates at least 6 months out. October is time for Parents' Weekend at many of the local colleges. One of the weekend end of October is always Head of the Charles Regatta - either of these puts a strain on hotel availability and may drive up cost.

And, of course, when the Red Sox win the World Series again next year, the weekend of the games and subsequent celebration will be crowded.

Kristen, on October you must rent a car to get out of the city to see the fall colors. At least for a day. The colors are unbelievable and unforgetable.

Also, are your children old enough to see the Blue Men group, hope they will still be around next year.

With foliage, parents weekends, conferences, and various sporting events, October is just about the busiest month for hotels in Boston; be sure to plan ahead and be sure to get out and see some foliage!

Kristen, I'd go to quickbook.com and hotels.com and come up with a few good priced options to compare. Unless you're looking for a hotel destination rather than a city destination, well, whoever's running the best deal that week should work....Marriott,Westin,Copley, Collonade, Lenox etc in Back bay area to name a few, or the waterfront hotels, also a wonderful destination and center of activity with the aquarium, faniel hall, northend.....And as a side note, if you do book thru one of these agencies, a few days later confirm with the hotel that they do in fact have your reservation, and their cancellation policies. I always use them for city destinations. Good luck.

Just stayed at the Millenium right across the street from Faneuil Hall and also stayed at MArriott Copley Place. The rooms at the Marriott are pretty generic but large. Marriott is located right next to one of the shopping malls and connected to others. Very close to Westin and the beginning of the Duck tours. Rooms at Millenium were nicer than Marriot but smaller. Got the room at Millenium off of Priceline for 150.

Kristen,

This place is a businessman's hotel, however it does offer decent rates and is in a good location >>> John Hancock Hotel --- http://www.jhcenter.com/
See comments about it on Trip Adviser.
