Need Florida Keys Advice

Hi,
Husband and I are traveling to the Keys in May and would like advice on what to do, lodging, restaurants, etc (staying in Key Largo, Islamorada/Marathon & Key West). We love to snorkel, swim, historical sites, etc. Restaurant advice would also be helpful. Thanks!

We enjoyed Key West - particularly the snorkeling charter, the Hemingway House, Mel Fischer Museum, and the Conch Train; also everyone gathers in the square in the early evening to watch the street performers and the sunset. We enjoyed Mangoes on Duval for dinner.

Snorkeling is quite good at Pennekamp Coral State Park. The beach at Bahia Hondo is beautiful.

If you're into history, don't skip the Truman White House at Key West.

This gives you some idea of what types of snorkeling trips are available out of Key West...

In Key West I agree with pretty much everything contained in this article...

We took a full day sailboat trip that included a 1/2 day of snorkeling & a 1/2 day eco-tour of the mangrove islands. It included lunch & beverages, & we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Mel Fisher Museum as excellent, as was the Dry Tortugas/Fort Jefferson boat ride/tour & snorkeling.

Our favorite restaurant was El Meson de Pepe - great Cuban/Carribean food.

three friends just got back from a 10 day trip to the Keys.

Key west: Southernmost Hotel. great pool, tiki bar and restaurant on site. be sure to do Mallory Square for the sunset.
Have drinks at Sloppy Joes, Green Parrot and Garden of Eden.

Islamorado: stay at Lime Tree Resort. pastel hammocks, sunsets and swim pool on raised deck.
Check out Lorelei Bar/resort in Islamorada. live bands and dinner by the water.

Rum Runners and Whaoo ba
r too!
Marathon: snorkel with Captain Steve call 305-743-2031 for reservations. we did the Sombero Reef... tons of fish... beautiful!

have fun!!

Southernmost Hotel is a good choice but be aware you are at the southern end of Duval when most of the action is at the northern section. That's about a mile of traveling whenever you want to go to Mallory Square, Mel Fisher Museum, etc.

You also want to look into Fort Zachary Taylor in Key West. Historical as well as a decent beach.

Thought I'd mention John Pennekamp State Park (great snorkeling) is in Key Largo. Rent a bike or scooter in Key West. Great riding city!

Hi Klbremer,

Just got back last Friday! We Here are some restaurants:

Key West Restauarants
-Louie's Backyard (elegant but laid back)

-Alonzo's (traditional seafood)

-Croissant De France (yummy breakfast - crepes, omelettes) or they have a take-out bakery too.

-B.O.'s Fish Wagon - I would call it a hole in the wall but it's even less than that...but good conch fritters and fish sandwiches.

-Blue Heaven for atmosphere (chickens and roosters walking around) - pretty good American breakfast.

In Islamorada (right on the highway)
Islamorada Bakery (Bob Best Bunz) - for the best fried grouper sandwich EVER!

Oshkosh, could you tell us some details about your snorkeling trip to Sombrero Reef with Captain Steve? What kind of boat, how many people on the charter, how long where you out snorkeling? Does he have a website or business name? Thanks for any additional info.
