need advice on Portland Or. hotels

We have stayed at wonderful hotels in Portland Or. but we would like to try another hotel. We have stayed at 5th Ave Suites, The Benson, The Governor. We would like to try something different. We are looking for a luxury hotel-in or around downtown. Two that caught my eye were Hotel Vintage Plaza and Hotel Mallery, but need advice --thanks Jane

Hi
The Vintage Plaza is the sister hotel to the 5th Avenue Suites. I prefer the 5th Ave Suites which is having a grand opening on Feb 15th as a Monaco Hotel ( Kimpton)..same hotel, different decorating, upgrading for 4* status.
Next to the Vintage is the Lucia.
Hotel Mallory has been gone for over a year, sorry.
It is the Hotel DeLuxe and a poster here -beachbum - has stayed there, he can tell you more than I..it is supposed to be very nice.
The Paramount is very nice but there is a large construction project going on in front of the hotel, quite noisy.
I might look at the Westin, though if you liked the Benson and Governor, you would probably like the Heathman..Large hotel , older crowd, nice for high tea ~

We are looking for luxury or boutique type hotel. I loved the 5th Ave suites but read that some rooms have had dogs urine on the floor--that turned us off. So any more ideas. If we go with the Monaco Hotel (5th ave suites) should we ask for a special room type? thanks again

I'm confused...you say that you have already stayed at the 5th Avenue Suites?

Anyway, that hotel has one specific floor for dog rooms. Even though we live here, we have stayed there several times (not with our dog though) and never had anything but a great room. We were there again just last weekend. We had a king suites on the top floor (10 floors total) with a partial view of Mt. Hood.

As Scarlett said, Beachbum can vouch for the De Luxe. I have not stayed at the Vintage Plaza or Lucia, but both of those would be my next choice.

Sorry to confuse you. Yes, we have stayed at the 5th Av Suites but not since it has changed ownership. And we do want to try someplace different but of the same quality or better. If there are no other great hotels, we would go back to our favorites. I will keep studying the reports and am leaning toward the Vintage Plaza or Lucia unless I read that Hotel Deluxe is better. We have had poor hotel rooms, so I have learned to depend on this website for information Thanks

The 5th Avenue Suites has not changed hands, nor is it about to. It has been part of the Kimpton group and will be, but just renamed after the rennovations.

When did you stay at the 5th Ave Suites?
I am sorry, but I doubt there has ever been a report of dog urine on the floor, are you sure it was the Kimpton 5th Avenue Suites in Portland where you stayed? They have always been a Kimpton.
When you say you want to stay in a "better" hotel, that could be difficult, since it is one of the best hotels in Portland, but maybe just not to your taste.
The Vintage and the Lucia are considered lesser hotels in the sense that they don't have quite the same amenities, room size, etc...or try the hotel down by the waterfront, The Riverplace. One poster who stayed there once many years ago raved about it, might be just your cuppa tea

Well, I've stayed at DeLuxe, but don't know if I can be of much help because I've never stayed at 5th Ave. Suites. :-S I'd describe DeLuxe as 1940s - '50s Hollywood retro chic (or something like that). Nice place. We were given a free upgrade when we checked in, so our room was almost suite-sized, but I have read, and also noticed some rooms are quite small. Bathrooms are also tiny compared to most newly constructed high-end hotels.

And, you need to be okay with the location, which isn't bad, but there's not much going on in the immediate surrounding area. Hmmm.... Have I talked you into DeLuxe????

Anyone had any RECENT experience at Riverplace?? :-"

Scarlett- I wish you had been there too
would have been fun to meet you and mms.

I was there with 6 women for a big BD party- we went to see a play called
"Who Stole My Dead Husband" and we did a lot of wining, dining and shopping.
Very fun weekend.

sunbum--Sounds nice a perfect girls weekend!

We did see one of the Trailblazers in the elevator with us. My DH knew who it was, but all I knew was the guy was HUGE and was wearing a lot of gold, lol!

mms, we have at least one of those basketball players living in our building..I feel like a midget when we ride in the elevators.
I think they laugh at me when I straighten my back and try to look taller ...
