I live in Florida and my friend is going thru chemo. She should be finished in mid-November. A group of us want to take her some place "warm" during Christmas. Can't do a cruise because of her immune system being down.
Do any of you like in a place, besides Florida, where temperatures are at least in the 60s during Christmas?

Silivia, I am sorry about your friend. From my experience (my husband went through chemo and another time through radiation)I can tell you that she may not be ready for any travels a few weeks after her chemo. It really depends on many factors. I would just plan a very short distance trip from home and then wait for a couple more months before deciding where to go. She needs to agree to your plan. There are many nice places to spend christmas vacation in Florida.

There's no guarantee on the temps, but it's often in the 60's or above in GA over the holidays. A drive up to the Ritz Carlton Reynolds Plantation on Lake Oconee would make a great getaway. And, if it happens to be cooler you can snuggle up in front of the big fireplaces and enjoy. The property is gorgeous - reminds me of a coastal NE lodge.

Somewhere in FL closer to home may be the best bet, as Mama said.

Hi - I would suggest that whereever you go, make sure it's in driving distance. Flying isn't a good idea either because of her immune system. My mother had a course of radiation that was finished this past February and then flew to Florida for a wedding in early March. She didn't think her immune system was compromised but managed to catch a terrible cold from the plane which turned into pnemonia and required a brief hospital stay. Plane air is recirculated and all it takes is one person with cough...

I dont have a suggestion of a place to go- although Sedona,Az. comes to mind- but wanted to tell you that although her immune system is of course compromised-she doesnt necessarily have to do a "short" trip because of it. I have a friend who is also going through chemo and she just came back from a week in London with her dr's permission and she did fine.
When she is finished her chemo ( 3 weeks from now) one of our friends who has a private jet is flying 8 of us to Sun Valley Idaho to their condo for 4 days - what a celebration that will be!!

Thank God we live in the age of miracles when cures for diseases long thought fatal are now possible. God bless both of you, she will need your love and support through her course of treatment and celebration of life.

With the immune system still down, I would avoid anything to do with crowds, public transportation, etc.

Surely you can find some nice place nearby that would be nice.

Thank you everyone - we will take your advice and stay close to home and just drive somewhere. I just read an article about King Tut's exhibit in Ft. Lauderdale, so maybe we will just explore our home state during that time. Also, if she is not feeling up to it, we can just cancel hotel reservations and not have to worry about flights and other costs.

re Bermuda - I live here and while it may read 60 on a thermometer the dampness makes it feel much colder. I would try some other place.

I would suggest Arizona. We're somewhere in the 50's and 60's in the Phoenix area around Christmas.
