Navy Mom looking for motel room

My son is based on Coronado Island. I wanted to go visit him this weekend before he starts sea trials for the next six months. I am looking for a near by affordable motel with hopefully a pool. I found one for $104 three and a half stars in Mission Valley/with pool but was hoping to pay less each night. I found a one star hotel in El Cajon for $47 which is a Motel 6. Do you think that is my best bet is the Mission Valley one or could I do better and is that easy travel for my son from Coronado with traffic? Thanks!

$104 IS rock bottom for that area - I'd grab it.

bardo,

thanks for your quick reply. you were right. it was to good to be true. after going through the formalities of booking the room on hotwire it now shows they do not have that deal.
Thanks again.

I was curious about Marriott on Cornado, but it's pricey this weekend (over $200). The Courtyard (by Marriott) Downtown is $149. May be more than you want to spend, but just a thought. (2 miles from Coronado)

Is there a water shuttle that runs from downtown to Coronado? I thought there may be.

I also looked at bedandbreakfast.com and found the Cherokee Lodge has rooms for Sat. and Sun at $120/ night - right on Coronado Island. Here's the link -

You might get a special military rate if your son can check into the room in his name.

There is an Econo Lodge not far from Coronado, and a Ramada that's nice. No pools at either.

The Quality Inn on 7th Street isn't far and has a pool. www.choicehotels.com

Also you might try this economy chain, they have a few locations around San Diego and I know that the Qualcomm stadium hotel has a pool.

800 NITE INN

Check www.biddingfortravel.com. You should be able to get something on Priceline. I stayed at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla for $50 a night a few weeks ago.

I hate to destroy your plans, but I must ask ... is your son aware of your plans, or are you planning to surprise him?

Shipboard duty often means having to work some weird hours and shifts, by civilian standards. If he's not free, you could find yourself spending the weekend alone. And even if he is free, he might have "more important" plans ... as much as we love them, our kids don't always do the right thing when something "more fun" comes up.

I certainly DO hope you and your son have a great visit ... but want you to know that a surprise visit could be disasterous.

I'd definitely try Priceline because they do have deals in the San Diego area.

First go to the above website (www.biddingfortravel.com) - that will tell you how much people are paying for hotels for in San Diego area.

ibemaggie, can you stay on Coronado? There is usually lodging for active duty military and their families on bases and posts that is much, much cheaper than the going rate in the community. If there isn't such lodging on Coronado, there might be at the Presidio--I know it's closed, but I seem to racall reading that some housing, and possibly temp lodging, remains open. I found this website http://www.nasni.navy.mil/contact.htm, which includes a phone number (and a broken web link) to something called the Navy Lodge. Good luck!

OK, I suffered a brain fart: forget about the Presidio, it's in a totally different place. Sorry! But do check out that website...
