In Naples, "luxury" means one thing -- The Ritz. Naples Beach Resort can be fine, but it is generally rather old and tired, constantly being redone, but in a much different category from The Ritz. I'd suggest Edgewater Beach Club over it if you want to be IN Naples rather than a half hour north of Naples as the Ritz is.

The Ritz is an amazing hotel!

The Registry is also very nice, however to get to the beach you have to take a short tram ride (through the mangroves, which can be a neat experience in itself)

jen, where area are you looking in Naples? North Naples or Closer to "downtown"... the Pier?

Patrick, I have to disagree that The Ritz is not IN Naples, I realize legal the legal "city limits" but I def.consider the Ritz a Naples Resort.

Edgewater and Ritz are not close to being in the same categorie and The area close to the Ritz (Waterside Shops great resturaunts ect) is great... I would say the drive to 5th Ave shopping would be about 20 minutes (traffic) although Naples is not now in Season, so like any city it would depend on the time of day.

Email me If I can be of any further help

ps. about 7 minutes south of the Ritz (close but this one is NOT in Naples) is a new Hyatt which gets wonderful raves

Ruby, The Hyatt is a fair distance north of the Ritz, rather than south. It's in Bonita Springs, in fact quite far north in BS too, but is a WONDERFUL resort. My only objection to it is the distance from Naples--a 40 minutes drive in the summer, but...we put up with it.

Prior to Hyatt building that resort, we stayed at the Registry when we went down. Both that and the Ritz are separated from their beaches by a boardwalk--which is a big positive for many people with the Edgewater Beach, which is right on the Gulf.

Patrick is our Naples resident poster...lucky enough to escape the oven for a summer in England. Sigh... Guess what the weather was today Patrick? Hot and humid. Tomorrow, hot and humid, Thursday, hot and humid. You know the routine. Miss your more frequent posts here but glad you can stay in touch at least a bit while across the pond.

OOPS!!!
Thank you I totaly stand corrected, I meant 17 minutes North NOT 7 minutes SouthI dont know what I was thinking... cooking and typing just dont mix

I recognize Patrick as the Naples poster, and I do respect his opinion!

However, I have lived there for years as well, and still go back quite often as my family lives there.

Yes there is a boardwalk for the Ritz but it is very short, you can be at the beach within 100 steps from the pool, the Registry's board walk is more "involved"

Ruby

p.s Thanks oliveoyl for your thoughts on my Hyatt Grand Cypress thread

Have you made up your mind which way you want to go with that yet?? I would hate for you to be disappointed in Regency Club if that's what you decide, and regret not having just done the regular room for longer. You CAN always get goodies elsewhere and (schlep) them to your room as we all know LOL! Truly, that is a solution to your dilema. It's a tough decision.

Naples is a beautiful town...you are so lucky to have a connection there still. As often as we have gone down, I had never done the drive Patrick recommended to me last trip. Turn left at the beach, not right as we always had done to eventually get back to the Registry or even to the Hyatt (we'd stay inland before cutting back to that gawdawful 41). Normally we are too tired from marathon shopping on 3rd to head away from the direction we are staying, but the drive south this last time was almost unbelievable! We both instantly were wide awake again and astounded at what we were seeing. One of the homes almost appeared to be trying to recreate a scene from the road to Hana! It's a beautiful town, and a great escape from this area.

On the directions thing by the way, I figured you just mis-spoke as you'd said at the same time it was further away.

Did the same thing the other day, too describing the suite we lived in the Savannah hotel, as looking north over the river and south over River St. It was a big suite but did not span the entire top floor of the hotel! (Looked north and east)

I vote for the Ritz at Vanderbilt Beach in Naples because it is the quintessential old fashioned grand hotel. Beautiful verandas with rocking chairs all lined up, wonderful outside dining, charming courtyard and fountain, oh, classic, classic, grand hotel!
