We left North Dakota for Montana around 1940 with all our possessions on a truck like something out of the Grapes of Wrath. I believe we even had a goat with us, as my brother was allergic to cow's milk.

Going to Maine for 4 or 5 days when I was around 15 was my first real trip. My cousin's 1st husband's family rented a cottage there every summer. Cousin and hubby had 4 little daughters. I spent a lot of time with them that summer playing baby sitter so was invited on the Maine trip, as well.

The two adults plus probably one kid was in the front seat of the car. The other three girls and I were crammed into the back seat. It was probably a two-door car, too. It was probably a 3 to 4 hour drive.

I remember going to the ocean (COLD water!), Old Orchard Beach and to Kennebunkport and eating salt water taffy and thinking I was in heaven!

First trip I took by myself was from San Francisco to Honolulu when I was 16 in 1971. I flew on a Boeing 747. Very exciting! It was my fist time on a plane.

Age 3, about 1940, Sunday School outing from Indiana to the Cincinnati Zoo, riding in back of flatbed truck. I got car sick, sat in lap of old " Aunt Ophelia" (I grew up to marry her great nephew). I was impressed by the zoo's big orangutan, Suzie, so much that my nickname was Suzie-the-Monk for years and some relatives still call me Suzie.

A trip to Lake Winnipisaukie (sp?) when I was 3. My father collected some of the peeled bark off the white birches and made me a toy birch bark canoe. (Which my brother sat on and squashed when he was 3 - the little rat.)

My only memories are of the lake, him making me the canoe, and eating an early breakfast in a tea shoppe run by two very old ladies the morning we left. (I had never had blueberry pancakes before).

I remember going to Atlantic City with my parents in the 1970's when I was a little kid. We went to Steel Pier and saw Al Martino a few times at a free concert area because my Mom got sunburned and didn't want to go back in the sun. I also got my picture taken with a Mr. Peanut character. It was a simple vacation but we had a great time! I also remember that seatbelts weren't commonly used back then.

A road trip from southern Michigan, where we lived, up to the UP. I think I was around 8 years old at the time. The only thing dad allowed us to listen to on the car radio was the Indianapolis 500. It drove my sister and me crazy-nothing but race cars noises for hours!

I have only hazy memories of this. During the latter part of WWII, my dad was stationed in San Diego. After the war, he decided he liked the So. Calif weather much better than Indiana so, he bought an old WWI army recon car (huge, one ton truck chassis with an open car-style body), packed up the family, and we made the trip down Hwy66 in the summer time.

I was about 4 1/2 and can remember hunkering down on the floor between the seats to get out of the wind and the sun. I can also remember the canvas water bag hung on the front of the radiator so evaporation would keep the water a little cooler. I don't have any idea where it was but I can remember being mightly impressed with a roadside motor hotel where the "rooms" were shaped liked tepees.

I cannot imagine how my parents handled it. We were four kids - I was the oldest at 4 1/2 and my youngest sister was about 9 months old. I'd guess it would make an "are we there yet?" seem like a minor irritant.

I was born in Kenya (Dad was a US journalist based in Nairobi). Mom and Dad used to joke that my brother and I would say "do we have to go to the Game Park again?"... I'm not sure I actually remember the game park, although it wasn't until I was much older that it dawned on me that seeing lions, giraffe, zebra and elephants in their natural environment was not something most North Americans have experienced, so there must be some retention of memory of sorts, although it could be memory from home movies my parents shot.

I definitely remember at 4 years old flying back to the States, passing through Egypt and Italy, I remember how beautiful I thought our hotel in Italy was with big windows that opened out onto the street with flowers. I remember in Egypt my Mom looking concerned as she was lifted up on a camel for a walk, but unfortunately not much else. In retrospect, how contrasting it must have seemed to me after having only experienced Kenya my first 4 years, probably why the memories held.

Kamsack, Saskatchewan, Canada. Honest. Say that quickly if you can.

I was 16 and flew there to visit a pen pal; it was my first time in an airplane. Itinerary was NYC-Toronto (change planes) Toronto-Winnipeg-Regina (change planes) and finally Regina-Yorktown, Saskatchwan. My pen pal's family picked me up there.

It was all propeller planes and between Toronto and Winnipeg, well, I had a problem. Everyone wanted to feed me after that, and I was not eating. When we landed, yes, they wanted to take me for breakfast.

I was just glad not to be flying. The trip took 16 hours altogether (much of it done at night), as I remember it. Not the greatest introduction to flying.

My family didn't travel - we had no dough! But my first trip was at 16yrs old - my girlfriend and I took a 3 day train ride from S. Bend IN to Hollywood FL with a 6 hr layover in DC from midnight till 6am. This was back in 1981 - the train station was quite a shocker! I had never seen so many "things" in my life. I remember there was a "lady of the evening" washing her underwear in the sink in the girls bathroom - I thought that was pretty special, but when she took off her wig I really flipped!

Then there was the guy slamming the pay phone against the phone all the while screaming at the top of his lungs.

We were so tired but afraid to sleep, so we huddled together lined on a wall outside of where the trains come in.

What a learning experience! Had a great time in FL!

We spent a week every summer in Wildwood, NJ. During that week we would drive over to Atlantic City to spend the day on the Steel Pier. My memories of the Steel Pier were the diving horse, the diving bell and seeing Al Albert's Showcase. It was there I fell in love with "West Side Story" Our first "big" trip was to Disney World back in the early 70's. We drove down in our old Monte Carlo, what memories!

As a young kid (in the 70's) it would be a week in Brigantine, down the boardwalk from Atlantic City, or upstate PA to visit our Grandmom.

The first 'real' trips would have been to NYC and DC. They were probably in 1978 - 1980, sadly I can't remeber exactly when.

Our first big trip was to Anaheim/LA, Hawaii and San Francisco in 1981. My older brother was 12 and my twin and I were 9. We live in PA and this was our first flights.
