N.Y.C. Restaraunt Favorites
We will be in the city in mid July for 5 nights , we need some restaraunt recommendations! We eat everything and would like to make the most of our time and hit some good places. Just read the review of Per Se, sounds fabulous but we aren't thinking that splurgy, our visit is a pre-cruise deal. We don't mind some high-end dining, but we also don't want to go just by the guidebooks. We are staying at The Fitzpatrick, 57th and Lexington, but are willing to cab it for a good meal. Please advise. Thanks

I'll give you some places near your hotel.
Le Colonial on 57th betw Lexington & 3rd (I think it's across the street from your hotel) is French/Vietnamese. They have a dining room downstairs and a more casual bar area upstairs with tables also. It's a very attractive looking place (that attracts a good looking crowd
) and is great for a full meal or a drink and some hors d'oeuvres. There's a bargain prix fixe dinner early.
The Brasserie in the Seagram's building on 53rd betw Park & Lexington serves breakfast, lunch & dinner (I think it's open 24/7). It's French and has recently been renovated.
On the other side of the Seagram's building (on 52nd st) is the famous Four Seasons restaurant. It's pricey but I would suggest going in for a drink at the bar just to have a look at this famous place. BTW, the Four Seasons hotel (unrelated) is a block away from yours on 57th betw Madison & Park and has a great bar.
Speaking of all these famous buildings, the nearby Lever House on Park & 53 has a new restaurant but I've not yet tried it and I think it's very $$$.
Teodora is an Italian that I think is in or next to your hotel. I've never tried it but it gets a good review in Zagat and a friend says he saw the Clintons in there once.
Your area has some of the best Chinese in NYC. Shun Lee Palace, 2 blocks away on 55th st. is considered by many to be the best Chinese rest. in NYC. It's not cheap but IMO well worth the price. On the same block, a few doors away is Our Place. Not quite as good but a lot less expensive. Mr. Chow's on 57th betw 1st & 2nd is the most $$$ & attracts lots of celebs. Mr. K on Lexington and 51 is also very good.
PJ Clark's on 3rd ave. & 55th is a landmark in NY. Great burgers.
Brio on Lexington & 61 is a good place for a thin crust pizza before or after shopping at Bloomingdales.
A lot of restaurants have bargain priced 2 or 3 course lunches. It's a great way to try and experience some of the better places without breaking the bank. Happy eating.

We loved Cara Mia on 9th Ave. between 45th and 46th St. Reasonable prices, great food.

We were in NYC a few weeks ago and a very good meal at Ristorante Grifone on 45/46th(?) between 2/3rd ave.
Very good Italian. Seemed more Northern Italian. Excellent service from Joseph and Mario. Nice wine list too.
We also had a very good Mrs Kal's B'day dinner at "Otto" (a Mario Batali restaurant) in lower Manhattan. It got so-so revus in some websites but we were very impressed. Not that expensive either.

8 1/2 also has a great Sunday buffet for $27. Both breakfast and lunch items, plus when we were there in March there were 3-4 hot meat dishes that are not listed on the buffet menu.
