The procedure is the same at all US airporst. When you land, you'll go through immigration (a long line) and then pick up your bags and go through Customs. You will then re-check your bags and find your flight to San Diego, and you'll have to go through security once again. Getting on your next flight might require a ride on the Airtrain at Newark. Which airline(s) are you flying on?

Here is a map of Newark Airport with a listing of the terminals for each airline. You can take the monorail between the terminals. If you are arriving on the same airline you will be using to San Diego that will make it very simple.

If you are arriving and departing from Terminal C everyting is easy. You'll deplane and proceed to the Immigration checkpoint (just follow the croowds - the way is well marked and, in fact, you can only go from thr plane to immigration). Have your passport and other documentation handy. After clearing immigration you'll proceed to the baggage carosel to claim your checked luggage (the Flight Attendant will announce the baggage claim carosel number just prior to landing but if you forget or don't hear the announcement there will be TV monitors with your flight number by the correct carosel). Obviously, if you only have carry-on luggage there's no need to go to the luggage carosel.

After claiming your luggage you will proceed to the Customs line (again follow the crowds). Be sure to have your Customs Declaration (you'll be given that on the plane) completed and signed. The Customs agent will ask you if you have anything to declare. They may wave you on through or make a full inspection of your bags - it's done randomly. Once you clear customs you'll recheck your bags just outside the customs roomm. You then proceed to your departure gate (follow the signs). Besure to check the overhead montiors to confirm you depature gate.

If you already have your boarding pass for your connecting flight you are all set and all you have to do is wait for your flight to be called for boarding. If you don't have your boarding pass for the connecting flight check with one of the gate agents and they will print it for you.

Be aware that with young people the Immigration officer often asks questions to determine that you are not planing to stay on after your visa expires and look for work (naturally this is illegal). Be ready to show them your return ticket to your own country, to tell them how long your vacation (I assume it's a vaction) will be and the name and address of the hotel you will be staying at in San Diego.

Not having answers ready, or a definite hotel reservtion, is a red flag and may cause them to ask you a lot more questions - including how much money you have, ask to see your credit and ATM cards etc. So - be ready to answer them - and get through quickly.
