My ___'s so broke . . .

My BF is so broke, the last time I sat on his porch, a pigeon flew up and I shooed it away and he was like, “Damn! That was dinner!”

LOL, I just had to try that! Seriously, my BF is on a pretty tight budget. He’s a Philosophy student – yup, that broke -- and saving up for a trip in the fall. In the meantime, I’ve taken the opportunity to study on a barge in Alaska every few weeks for work. But I’m going to miss my sweetie. Besides email (both of us are very flaky about it), can anyone tell me a cheap way for him to contact me while I’m on the boat?

Cheaper than email? Maybe tie a note to that pigeon.

Sams Club sells AT&T phone cards with an under 3 cents/minute rate. That might be for only the continental US, not sure - but worth looking into.

Well, considering some of the other forms of communication might be difficult (although I do like the message in a bottle idea), I would say email and a phone card are your best bet!

Just remember...

Phone cards will not work on a boat because you have to access a high seas operator. Ship to shore calls are expensive.

SEETHEWORLD

You are correct of course. I was away three weeks this spring and realized how much I needed my partner! It was fun coming home and she looked great.
Am I an old romantic or what??

I agree that you’re pretty much incommunicado when you’re on the boat. When you’re at port, however, maybe he can use OneSuite, a very affordable and far-reaching long distance service, and contact you via email with time/date for chatting. In the meantime, the boy is going to have to find another means of survival, the philosophy road is a bleak and drunken one!

Boy wemr, that was pretty funny.

Did you spend all day coming up with that one? Amazing how simple minds come up with stupid responses.

Why not a clever response like Ahhnold,GoTravel, or John? But then again, all you can do is S#@t on people in an ignorant way.

assuming you will have access to a computer or laptop you can instant message each other. i use aol. it is free. i have spent alot of time talking to friends in iraq this way over the past year. you talk in real time just like on the phone except you type everything (unless you both have microphone attachements - then you can actually speak to each other)you will need to preplan when you will each be on line.
again this is FREE!! the bf will be thrilled. just go to aim.com and make up screennames....

Actually, Virginia, that's a great idea. My son actually did that when his girlfriend was in Australia - it's called Skype.

A couple of caveats:

1) What kind of barge? If you're going to be working the ``slime line'' in the belly of a fish processor . . . be very sure that you want to do that.

2) If you're on a fish processor, don't expect any cheap communications with shore. On shore, most phone cards that work in the ``continental U.S.'' should work just fine -- unless you're calling Hawaii.
