Museums in NYC

Has anyone been to the police or firefighter museums? If so, were they worth the time and money?

No - sorry - have never been to either. Don;t even know where they are. Is this a special area of interest for you? Have you seen all the other museums in NYC?

If neither - I would consider some of the more popular, traditional museums first. Not saying these aren;t good - but NYC has several dozen museums to choose from.

I have been to the Museum of Natural History, Met. Museum of Art, Museum of Radio and TV, Museum of City of New York, New York Historical Society, Lower East Side Tenement Museum, Museum of Transportation, Folk Art Museum, Ellis Island, and maybe some I can't remember. The only reason I ask is because I'm looking for some interesting ones I haven't been to. Also, what about the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace?

If you are going to be here over a weekend you might think about going over to Govenours Island. It is now open on weekends. It was a home for coast guard and their families and was handed back to New York City a few years ago. Makes for a lovely day to see the sites there.

Well thre's the Cloisters in upper Manhattan - truly unique in the US with it's emphais on midieval europe.

There's also the Museum of Sex which is unique in a whole other way.

Among others you did not mention that are worthwhile are:

The Frick
Guggenheim
The Whitney
New York Public Library usually has great exhibits
Museum of El Barrio

Lincoln Center has a museum as have FIT and several of the other educational institutions

Outside Manhattan, Brooklyn has BAM, the Bronx has Wave Hill and there are a whole variety of "birthplace" type museums spread throughout the 5 boroughss.

There is in fact a magazine called Museums New York - that I believe has a web site with info on dozens more
