Are there any folks out there living in Portland who could point out where I might find information about moving to that city?

I would recommend spending two weeks there in January or February before deciding. While there, check out the job scene.

If you can find a good job (or are getting transferred with a decent salary and benefits), and can stand the weather, it's a fabulous small city.

djkbooks - I live just outside of Montreal so I have some experience with January and February in the northeast. I can't imagine that Portland's winters are worse. Maybe more soggy, but not colder, right?

Can anyone comment on the economy of Portland? Are there jobs? What are housing prices like? My partner and I are both professionals looking for a big change in our lives.

I think Portland, like Portsmouth, NH, is a great little city; I've spent a good amount of time there as my daughter was in college in Maine. If you can handle Montreal weather, you can handle Portland's. The city itself has a lot to offer, culturally and otherwise, plus a great little airport to get away. And the Maine coast in the summer? Couldn't be better...I'd do it in a heartbeat.

You will LOVE Portland! I lived in the Portland area for twenty years, made the mistake of moving "back home" four years ago, and am now figuring out how to move back (you cannot "go home again" however you can always go back to Portland!!). Housing in Portland is expensive right now (and taxes are high), but check out all of the bedroom communities - south, north and west. You will find a place to live, and more importantly, you will find yourself at home in the Portland area!! Best of luck to you............
