moving to New Haven CT

Possibly Moving from Southeast Louisiana to New Haven, CT..... working for a well known non profit organization. Single, 51 and looking for a fresh start. I need information on housing costs, living expenses, etc. I would like to find a nice 1 bedroom cottage relatively close to work but will drive if no more than 30 min away and in the country. Please help.

Sorry - just had a quick look and it seems like the average property tax in LA is $243 (can this possibly be right????) while CT is $4436 (which also seems very low) - unless those do not include all town and local taxes.

In the town of Ne Haven the average home price is only $160,000 (but this is not just houses, also apts) while in the metro area the average is $293K for a detached house. This average is probably reduced by the very low cost of housing actually in much of the city.

Housing in the "close in" areas, meaning near the Yale Campus, is very expensive. A 1-bdr apartment will run over $2000 a month.

Where is work?

Keep in mind that while there are some really nice areas in and near New Haven, there are also still areas of New Haven that you most certainly do NOT want to live in.

The general area would be around James St. Thanks everyone for your information!

I know nothing about New Haven on that side of 91. I'll ask around.

Know nothing about the area but you can use google maps to get a street view. it appears to be a fairly downscale area with light industry or big box stores and some quite basic large shared houses. Not sure about safety - I don;t know Ne Haven that well.

I do not know about costs these days but you can also look at Branford which is right over the Q bridge and a short commute, traffic willing.
