Late May is peak black fly season in northern New England (Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine), so even though there are many beautiful spots, it may not be ideal for outdoorsy activities.

For mountains, think about Glenwood Springs Colorado. There is a great hiking/biking trail to the east along the Colorado River in the Glenwood Canyon. There is a great bus service up to Aspen from Glenwood Springs.
