Cassandra- so basically, anyone who knows they get seasick, we can automatically assumme they have "tried it all"? Interesting, but completely untrue, as evidenced by the very post above yours: Marilyn didn't know the pill form of the patch existed. Apparently she hadn't "tried it all". And do you really believe mlarson's husband has tried, or even knew about, all the remedies suggested here?
I don't know- lets hear from mlarson. Are you annoyed that this thread turned into a "how to cure seasickness" one rather than "will my husband and son get sick on a catamaran in Hawaii?" Has your husband and son tried all the things suggested above? Was the information useful?

You mean the patch on your ear doesn't make you drowsy? If not, I'll be using that. The reason why I'm not so crazy about traveling by plane is that I always have to use Dramamine and it makes me sleepy and zombielike and I have to go to the bathroom like 12 times during a flight so I always get a seat near the bathroom.

Larry1, maybe the assumption that we've "tried it all" is unfounded, but by and large, I'd doubt it. Being motion sick is a lousy, lousy thing, and people will do a LOT to avoid it, including a fair amount of research, and trial and error.
But again, mlarson didn't ask for help with that. It wasn't her question. This is like asking how much overhead space there is in an MD-80 and having all the answers deal with how to pack -- which also happens here a lot, I'm afraid.
Notice, the amount of over-the-backfence advising and prescribing she's getting here STILL outweighs the number of answers to her original question.

I think everyone here is a dyed-in-the-wool advice-giver, or at least they become that when they log on. If they don't have an answer to a particular question, they answer some other one that seems related. Sorry, dear Ms. Cassandra, but I've seen you do that very thing yourself. ;-)
In fairness, it's worth noting that mlarson's title was "Motion Sickness" not "Catamaran Boats in Hawaii -- will they cause motion sickness" or something like that. So of course, it catches the eye of everyone who has a tidbit to add about motion sickness.
For the record, I get quite ill myself, and yes, you do tend to try EVERYTHING.

We tried dramamine Less Drowsy with great results (its the same as Bonine, but it is not a chewable tablet, which I found gross tasting). Before our cruise, we took a dose at home to see if we get sleepy - we did not have any side effects. Each dose works for 24 hours, so we took 2 tabs before going to bed (starting the night before boarding the ship). The ship was rocking and rolling and we felt absolutely fine. We also drank (a lot) and it did not affect us at all. I think taking the dose before going to bed is the key to not getting sleepy.
When our cruise was over, we decided to go directly to Universal Studios. We went on every single ride, and for the first time I did not get motion sickness. I was able to keep my eyes open on all the coasters and not get sick to my stomach or feel dizzy. I love rides, but 1 ride used to make me feel lousy for a while. We went from the cruise ship to the Hulk coaster within 5 hours and I did not even feel "land sick" as many people do after leaving a 7 day cruise.
I did buy ginger tablets, but did not use them. I have read they work well too.

Yeah, I guess you're right, Cass. This is after all, a forum that discusses travel (via planes, autos, ships, etc) to various destinations that often feature boat or helicopter tours. Therefore it was ignorant of me to assume that talking about motion sickness cures in a thread entitled "Motion Sickness" would be topical or helpful to the forum at present or future searchers.
AND YES I'M BEING SARCASTIC!!!

I do appreciate everyone's suggestions, but I am amused at how many responses I got! I'm excited about the medication someone talked about that replaces the patch. I forget the individual's name and the drug's name. Anyway, I have a doctor's appointment with my son's pediatrican next week, and I'm definitely going to ask for a prescription for this drug. I printed the response, so I wouldn't forget the drug's name. Thanks again to everyone!

Aloha mlarson,
Can you provide any more info. about the catamaran tour that lets people swim with dolphins and turtles
I have only seen one tour from Oahu that mentions the possibility of swimming with dolphins, and tours from other Hawaiian islands don't seem to encourage this activity, though you can usually spot both turtles and dolphins on most catamaran tours. It is also difficult to predict how rough the ocean is going to be.
In my own experience turtles are easier to encounter while swimming from beaches on the Big Island, and so you do not need to do a tour if you happen to be going there. Oahu and Big Island resorts contain dolphin interaction programs, and so there is no need to get on a boat.

Another person on this bulletin message board gave me the name and website. What's neat is it's run by marine biologist. Here's the website.

I'm trying to talk my husband into it. It's a 4 hour trip, cost $95/person, and only negative is it's on the northshore side which means you'll need transportation, they don't provide it, so it means renting a car for the day for us, we're without wheels. You could ride the bus over at $1.50/person, but it takes 2 hrs and you leave the dock at 7AM! Hope this helps!!!!
