Morro Bay is a small town, right on the water with a nice harbor. The area is very pretty and Morro Rock is interesting to wander around on. There is a waterfront with restaurants and tourist shops. You can also rent kayaks and canoes or charter boats from there. The harbor is seperated from the ocean by a sandspit, so the water is very calm and great for paddling. Just south of Morro Bay is Los Osos, which has a nice state park. The downtown is cute, filled with various shops. There isn't a lot of nightlife in town.
Whether this is a day trip or overnight really depends on what you want to do. If you are driving up or down the coast, it makes a nice place to stop for the night between Monterey and LA.

I seond the recommendation for Pismo beach. We used to go to Morro Bay and stayed at the San Marcos Motel but lately have preferred Pismo Beach instead. Pismo beach just seems more relaxing. Each room at the Kon Tiki faces the beach.
