more help with oahu/maui please
Nearly ready to book but need some final advice. Arrive from Oz 2 adult 2 kids 11 & 15 early Sunday morning in September. Fly straight to Maui - can get $39 flights with Delta - should I book these yet ? 5 nights at Resort Quest Kaanapali Villas or should we splurge and stay at the Marriott? Do you recommend car hire for all 5 days? Return to Oahu 5 nights at Turtle Bay Resort beachfront villa - booking online through owner ( has anyone done this successfully?) Should we book car for all 5 days? Return to Waikiki- thinking of Outrigger on the beach for 2 nights before flying early departure to Oz. Any suggestions or changes recommended ?

Rent a car for the entire time you are there.
You have to have one on Maui to get around decent.
You can see Oahu much better with a car & it does not cost any more than what you would pay for shuttles, cabs, buses.
Book the flights now if you know for sure the days you will travel.
Delta has an agreement with Hawaiian Airlines. So that is probably where you will end up on for the $39 flights. Once the $39 seats are gone, they will be $49. Once they are gone it will be even more. They only have a certain amount of cheap seats on the flights.

My hesitation about Resort Quest Kaanapali Villas is that it's "removed" from the main part of Kaanapali Beach, i.e. it's north of Black Rock (the Sheraton), so you can't walk there on the beach path (the nicest thing about Kaanapali Beach). There are other hotels/condos up there, too, but the Hyatt, Marriott, Westin, Sheraton and other developments are south of Black Rock, as is Whaler's Village, which has restaurants, coffee, shopping etc. With kids 11 and 15, it would be very convenient to be able to walk to Whaler's Village.

If you go with the Kaanapali Villas, you will probably want to get a car. If you stay at the Marriott, you might be able to do without one. Like dmlove said, you are north of Black Rock which has a decent beach, but nothing else. If you are at the Marriott, you can walk to Whalers Village (shops & restaurants, beach activities), and catch the shuttle which will take you into Lahaina Town.

I stayed on the north side of black rock (at the Royal Lahaina Resort) and thought it was much better than the other side. The beach was practically empty, and the snorkeling was better on that side of the rock. Also, it was just a 10-minute walk along the path to the other resorts/Whalers Village.
