Monument Valley Tours

Looking for info on Monument Valley Tours. I took one a few years back from Gouldings. It was very good. Just wondering about other tours and locations. Coming in from 4 corners or Mesa Verde just wondering if there are other guides on our way or if Gouldings is the best.

Where is the Monument Visitor Center located (and with respect to Gouldings) and how are their tours

Unless they moved it, the Visitors Center is about a 1/2 mile off the main road and about another 1/4 to 1/2 mile from Gouldings. Personally, I've always liked and preferred to do a horseback trip through the Valley, with an Indian guide (the stables are sort of catty corner to the vistors center). That way, to me, you get to really "see" the sights, and you can smell them, and touch them. You can more easily, from horseback, visualize how it was 150 years ago. Simply awesome place.

Gouldings offers half and full day truck tours. Jeep tours are avaiable in the parking lot for the Visitor's Center.
Jeep tours usually run for two hours or more. The first time I visited I did a half day truch tour from Gouldings. On my second visit took a 3 hour jeep tour arranged for in the parking lot of the Visitor's Center.

do you pass the visitor center on the way to Gouldings?

Did you just pull up to the visitor center and sign up for a tour? Are the tours at pre-arranged times like 9 and 2.

Is there a web site for the visitor center? Who do you contact for a horse tour of the Valley?

When driving north on rt. 163 from Kayenta you make a left off the highway to get to Gouldings; to get to the Tribal Park (Monument Valley) you make a right off rt. 163. After paying admission for entrance to the park you drive to the Visitor's Center which is about 4 miles from rt 163. Unless things have changed you will find the parking area full of people offering jeep tours. Monument Valley is not part of the national park system so a National Park passport is not accepted for admission. Admision was $1 when I visited.

Also the tour from Goulding's stops at the visitor center and continues into MV, so you won't miss anything. I would assume Goulding's would hire some of the best drivers/commentators, but you also can have as many as 25 trucks waiting at the visitor center...horse tours are also in that area.

DH and i took a truck tour from the visitors' center in sept '00 and we were pretty happy with it. we got there from kayenta in the late afternoon, and the tour went out with only us and one other passenger. although extremely bumpy, we had a great time, it was nearly a customized tour since our driver told us we could decide how long we wanted to stay at each place as his time allowed, and when i asked him to teach me the correct pronunciation of the navajo words he was happy to do so. he also gave us choices on where to go, if he could manage, and towards sunset rushed us off to get a terrific view. can't remember exactly how much it was but pretty reasonable.

haven't been on the goulding's one but we were pleased with our tour. there's a lot of vendors who are in the visitors center who ask people if they want to go on a tour, so i would think you don't have to book.

have a great time when you go, i'd love to go back again sometime!
