Hi Daniel-
Great report! I am so glad you enjoyed your trip to our beautiful area. I think that any accent comes out when speaking with others with the same accent. I sound perfectly normal until I am around people dropping their Rs and turning Os into As. However, one habit I cannot drop is saying "wicked" at every turn of phrase. I think that regional accents are a pleasure to be treasured. Come back soon, Sharon

Ccrosner, Shaz-- Thanks for your words and your clarifications about Boston's accents. I know what you mean about accents materializing when around certain types of people. My Mom is terrible... from the US South and even talking with Southern friends on the phone, I'd hear her voice change as she spoke with Georgian friends. This I found kind of endearing; however, as a teenager, I used to get so embarrassed when as an ESL teacher, her accent morphed into one similar to her freshly arrived Chinese students.
Charli-- Thanks for the clarification about the photographs of the Portuguese matriarchs on one of the dock buildings when one arrives in the Provincetown Harbor, since it wasn't mentioned in any guidebooks, even though their photos are placed so prominently right before docking. Can always count on someone on Fodors for info! Thanks!

That last post I looked at and can't believe I wrote the word "terrible" to describe my mother changing accents. "Notorious" I think is a better adjective. My mother is not terrible at all (actually quite lovely ) just "notorious" for switching accents with whomever she may be speaking to.

If you're still out there charli, thanks for the clarification of the women's photos.
I've often kayaked below them (on days when the harbor is inactive) and have always wondered what the story behind those pics. was - could never find info.
I'd love to hear more about the featured women, as well as the technique behind the tranfer of the photos to the ? screens.
Very cool work.
