Molokai-1st Time
Looking for info on Molokai. We have an upcoming 7 day trip in Feb. We like to scuba dive, bike, hike and swim. Any suggestions as to where to stay and how to accomplish these activities is appreciated.

Have you already booked your airline tickets? I tried last March to book for this February and the rentals I wanted were booked over a year in advance. I did a lot of research here and on Tripadvisor, you should start there and then come back with more specific questions.

bfrac - so what did you find out in your research? I thought the idea of these forums was to post experiences and pass on information.I already have airline reservations.
Here are my questions?
What hotel did you end up with? Did you scuba dive/snorkel while you were there? What agency did you use for a rental car? Did you hike alone or with a company led excursion?

We stayed at the Beach village at Moloiai Ranch a few years ago 92003) and loved it. But it gets very mixed reviews on Tripadvisor. I just read one very negative review---mainly they were unhappy that they couldn't get a bottle of wine there, and no one would carry beach chairs out to the beach for them. We brought our own wine and didn't expect anyone else to carry chairs for us, and were fine. We also like the food---the served wonderful salmon and other nice dishes. Maybe we were just lucky, or maybe it has changed.
Anyway---there is wonderful mountain biking there. We rented a bike just for one half-day and took turns riding while the other watched the kids. So I didn't get to do much, but it was great. There is a good swimming beach about 20 minutes away (walking). I din't know about scuba or snorkeling--that might be elsewhere on the island.
WE rented a car one day to drive to the other end of the island, where there is lovely beach for bodysurfing. We had to take the shuttle back to the airport to pick up the car. I think there was only one agency, but we did get a Mustang convertible.
The one hike we really wanted to do, down to Kalaupapa, we could not do because of the child with us. But if I were going back to Molokai, I wouldn't miss that one---it looked gorgeous.

I did not end up booking on Molokai for this trip because the rental properties I was interested in were already booked. The hotel accomodations weren't very appealing to me and I wanted to rent a house so I decided to wait until next year. From what I have been told the east side beaches are the best for swimming and are protected by a reef; the west side beaches are muddy and not very nice. I just read a trip report on Molokai, I'll look for it and post back. Good luck and keep us updated on what you find.
