In an effort to avoid problems, I'll start this by asking about the reservation we have for this weekend. As I mentioned, we had quite a hard time finding anything (we hemmed and hawed for weeks, debating whether we wanted to spend the night before the game or just drive up that morning). We're planning to go with the AmeriSuites near the airport. Has anyone stayed there?

It looks like it should be convenient in terms of interstate access. We're also curious about the breakfast buffet.

I've started this thread because I was unable to post on the "message from CAPH on FF RR" thread.

Yesterday was quite hectic and I didn't have a chance to check Fodor's all day. Imagine how touched I was to open the above-mentioned post and find all the kind words, kind thoughts, survivor stories, encouragement, etc., etc.! I just can't begin to tell you how much those things help at a time like this.

For those who are offended by the non-travel related nature of these posts, I am truly sorry. I know more appropriate websites exist and I have every intention of seeking them out. Thanks to those who've recommended some of them!

If you click on my name, you'll see that I frequently answer travel threads. That's what brought me to this website. But, as has been pointed out, this is also a community. And that's what keeps people coming back so frequently. And, in turn, that's what keeps it such an active, useful TRAVEL site. If you've ever checked Frommer's, TripAdvisor, Yankee Magazine travel forum, etc., you know that most other travel websites have nowhere near the quick response time that Fodor's has. And that's directly related to the fact that there are so many well-traveled, helpful people who frequent this site because they're comfortable here.

As for those who are offended by the fact that we offer each other support on non-travel related issues, I can only hope you never find yourself in a situation where you have need to turn to "cyber-friends". And I'm immensely grateful that there are so many kind, warm-hearted individuals who visit Fodor's.

I cannot comment on AmeriSuites, but I hope you have a peaceful weekend and that the Twins/Brewers game takes your mind off things.

I've never stayed at the Amerisuites, but I have stayed at the Clarion Hotel which is very near to there. The location is indeed very good in regards to highway travel. Lots of restaurants on Layton (north of the hotel). It is an airport hotel area, that's the only drawback - but a small one.

I can't answer about that hotel, I'm a resident of MKE that lives along the north edge of Mitchell Field.

As far as highway access, that's good, the freeway entrance and exit is immediately south of the Clarion. Good restaurants are a little east of the Howell/Layton intersection. That intersection is the one with the Shell gas station and the KFC. The good restaurants to the east of there are "The Packing House" or a mile or so farther east "Selens". Going west, there's "Prime Quarter" or "Porterhouse". All four of those are excellent restaurants for dinner. There are of course places like Denny's, McDonalds and the ilk. There's also a fair mexican place, Jalapeno Loco. They're pretty good.

Thanks for the info on the area. We were reluctant to go with an airport hotel. But, as I said, our options were limited. And we hoped that, at least, it'd be convenient for getting downtown and to Miller Park. Sounds like it will be.

Oh yes! The Packing House and Porterhouse are indeed great places to eat! One of them (the Porterhouse, perhaps) is a little more upscale, but the food is very good. Excellent steaks!

We were at that hotel last fall - liked it very much; better, in fact, than the so-called 3*4 Points Sheraton just up the pike.

The breakfast buffet was the nicest we've ever had - cooked to order, with the friendliest crew! Really got the feeling that it's a business hotel with a lot of return clients and they were being greeted and chatted up in the breakfast room like real regulars.
