Midway Airlines -- shut down again

Midway just announced that it will shut down for a couple of months and then restart in some sort of arrangement with USAir. Not yet sure exactly what the relationship will be or whether it will even fly its own colors any more, but at least the CEO (who will keep his job w/in USAir....grrrrr.....) says the employees will get paid this time.

To clarify, employees are all being laid off but they WILL get their final paychecks, unlike the shutdown last year.

They will become US Air Express. Let's hope they at least keep the 737s and don't revert to the puddle-jumpers. Watch the fares between RDU and Boston/NY skyrocket.

Midway's press release said the 737s are history. My bet is that these new planes will go over to USAirways. Sorry, NC!

A whole bunch of ticketed passengers and no planes, how awful. Midway dumped the reticketing job over to USAir and sent their planes to Arizona.

Let's hope the employees get their paychecks. After the attempt to not pay after last year's 'bankruptcy' it wouldn't surprise me if they just walked away from their responsibilities.

Meanwhile, Ferguson (CEO) is keeping his job! Another case of screw the consumers, screw the employees, but keep the exec parachutes golden! When will this country wake up and say "no more!"?

I got to agree with you. Ferguson will keep his job which pays a few mil a year while he is laying off employees. However, he told me he'd like to reinstate 2/3 back but how about the 1/3 who will be permanently out of work?

There will now be no non-stop service (by any airline) between RDU and Tampa, and all service between RDU and Boston will now be on those miserable regional jets. And guess what's going to happen to air fares on the routes where Midway's only real competition was US Air?

Correction: Southwest does fly non-stop to Tampa, which is great from the point of view of fares but less great from the point of view of having to check in early and stand in line for the cattle call.
