Midtown Breakfast Joints

Can anyone recommend a good place for breakfast in the Midtown area (or Upper East Side)? We will be staying on Central Park South and would like to be able to walk.

One of the best places for breakfast is Norma's at the Parker Meridien hotel. I think it's on 58th between 5th & 6th -- easy walking distance.

I recently read that the new place for the power breakfast is Michael's. That is about 54th (or so) just off 6th Ave. Tough to get a reservation, though, if you aren't a publishing muckety-muck.

I second lisettemac's recommendation of Norma's. However, the restaurant is actually on 57th St. between 6th and 7th in Le Parker Meridien hotel.

The Brooklyn Diner on 57th between 7th and Broadway.

Viand is a coffe shop/diner place but a bit fancier because of the neighborhood on Madison Ave betw. 61-62

Doug -- thanks for correcting my location misinformation! I hate it when I do that.

Thanks for the suggestions. We are going to be there for a week and would like to experience a Sunday Brunch too.

Viand is a dump, what I would call a luncheonette. Not worth the walk. Petrossian Cafe on 7th Ave./betw 57 & 58 is very nice & also Cafe Europa on the corner of 57/7th.

Sunday Brunch at the Essex House - rated by Zagat as "best in NY".

Guastavinos also has a great weekend brunch. And the location (under the Queensboro Bridge is awesome and very unique). They're located at 59th and 1st.

Has anyone been to Town in the Chambers Hotel for breakfast? I live in NY but have friends visiting tomorrow. Not many places do brunch on weekdays, and I think Norma's is overpriced (though definitely somewhere to try once). I've heard great things about Town for dinner, but I don't know how their breakfast is. Other suggestions? Le Pain Quotidien? Rue 57?

Thanks!

Le Pain Quotidien is wonderful for what it is but it has a very limited menu. It's a good spot for coffee and croissants, and there's a few locations.

Right next door to the Brooklyn Diner on the southwest corner of West 57th and Seventh Avenue (across Seventh Avenune from Carnegie Hall) is Pick-A-Bagel.

Excellent and cheap.

On the west side of Seventh Avenue between 57th & 58th Avenue is a wonderful Korean.

Since you'll be there for a while, if you feelliek exploring, a little further away, and in the opposite direction, Route 66 on Ninth Avenue b/t 55 and 56 is a great little diner with excellent breakfast. Their fresh juice and fruit smoothies are terrific.
