I'm sorta stuck in the Airline/Car rental deal and I need your help:

Midsize: $241
Jeep: $303
Convertible: $340
*The cars are from Alamo.

Chevy Camero -- hmm its not my dream car
Jeep -- Pain if it rains
MidSize -- Boring

I'm going for a week in January, so whats my best bet (just two people, no kids).

Whoops -- Maui.

If I was to get a convertible, it would be more like a italian car than a chevy. Plus, chevies in general aren't too reliable But what could go wrong a in week?

If it was a Ford Mustang then maybe I would go for it. But I dont think Alamo carry Fords.

jjsoon...It looks like your going with your wife,so get the covertible. She'll be much more appreciative than the midsize, and jeeps(wrangler?) dont have any cargo, or at least less than a convert.

JJsoon: My husband and I were in Maui in April. I had reserved a Jeep in advance. After arriving and seeing that there is no way to lock the jeep - cut the plastic and anyone interested in what you have inside are in, and you camera, purchases etc are gone. We decided to go wth the convertable camaro (not our 1st choice either) They gave us a more favorable upgrade rate of, don't quote me on on it, $20-30 more for the whole week. stick with the jeep for now and upgrade when you get there. PS. Good luck getting much luggage in the trunk, but if your clever like my husband, you'll make it work until you get to your hotel. Have a great time.

The Camero is the poor man's luxury car. You see blue collar workers in the Camero. You don't see professionals driving around in a Camero.

Wow - talk about getting off track - the guy is just asking which RENTAL car he should get.

Rent a convertible no matter what kind, you're not going to buy it, right? It'll be so great to drive around with the top down taking in all the views with no obstruction, smelling the fresh air. Don't forget the sunscreen, especially right up there next to the hairline as your hair blows back! ahhhhhhh!

I've been to Hawaii 5 times. I rent a Sebring Convertible every time. Awesome!!!

Does anyone know if the Jeeps that you can rent have any lockable storage space? I know people who have Jeeps with a small storage space in the back (I wouldn't exactly call it a trunk), but does anyone know if the jeeps you rent in Hawaii have them also?

We,ve been to Hawaii 3x and have rented a Jeep each time. They do have a locking (trunk). Also you have the glove compartment. The only time we found this to be of issue, was when we were coming from, or going to the airport. Otherwise, the jeep is definately the way to go.

On our first trip, I got in the convertible, and it was very uncomfortable getting in and out. On hte island it is a lot of fun to run around in the jeep. I drive too much in my daily life to want to feel trapped in a car.

If you had more than two of you, I would say otherwise.

Have been to maui many times and have always rented a convertible and have never regreted it. The first few time i managed to rent a Chrysler Sebring and it was wonderful, really enjoyed it, smooth ride and lots of room, then one vacation due to such a good price, i rented a camero, it as horrible, never again, not enough room, it didnt drive well, i almost took it back and i regret i didnt, now, no matter how good a price, ill pass on the camero, so for me its the Chrysler Sebring or Ford mustang, but get a converitble if you possibly can.

Isn't a Jeep open as well, like a convertible?

And how quick is it to cover the jeep up when it rains?

My choice jeep, and only if there are two of you. I would like to do the road to hana without a roof as it is very shaded but I would want the four wheel drive aspect also. Would seek out four wheel drive options around the island.

Dan, seems like you're alone on this one... Why do people prefer convertible over jeeps? Are the roads in Maui bad or are they pretty much all paved? Its not like you can go offroading in the jungle?! Or can you?

I just rented a Chyrsler Seabring from Triangle for $269/wk before tax. Granted, not in Hawaii!

I am STUNNED to hear that the Camero is a bigger POS than the Seabring. The transmission was a joke and it was totally underpowered, and the crappy seats made your rear hurt after about 15 minutes. On the other hand, you put up with a lot to get a convertible, and it was less windy in the front seat than a Porshe 911. Unrestricted view while driving is great when you're in a scenic local!

And another thing. Make sure your wife likes convertibles. We rented the convertible as a treat for my mother-in-law and she acted like she was being tortured whenever we put the top down.
