Miami to Sunset Key - how to get there?
We will be traveling to sunset key hilton in Key West and were going to drive from Miami down, but don't know what we would do with our rental car once we get to Key West. I heard there are no cars on the island, and don't really want to pay to park the car at the hotel. Anyone done this? Suggestions appreciated! Thanks!

You are getting the wrong information, sure there are cars in Key West. I think you have two options:
1- find out if your rental car company has an office in key west and rent car one way. sometimes it is difficult to find cars that way.
2- you can always park your car in any of the strees close to duval. it is true , you will not be able to park on duval, but ok on side streets. are you staying in downtown, if so, is it ok to park car right outside hotel. key west is quite safe, and ok to leave car in any of the streets for several days.
If only option is to keep car, look for any parking space along flemming street and park there, make sure you do not park on restricted areas.

I think you mean there are no cars on Sunset Key, correct? It's a small island across from Mallory Square in Key West and you have to take a boat to and from it. There's no bridge.
If you don't keep the rental car, how are you going to get back to Miami?

Yes, I am referring to no cars on the island with Sunset Key. Good question, probably have to rent a car for the return trip, but would save a week's rental fee and parking fee. Just wondered if anyone had been there and done that. Thanks!

Hi. You are going to love Sunset Key. I'm a local and go there often to use the beach. it's great!
No cars on Sunset Key. Parking at the Hilton garage is $2/hr. Not sure what the daily rate is. There is probably a discount.
Neighboring Mallory Square has parking at $2/hr. also.
Parking on streets is metered. Meters are $1/hr. and run from 7am-12am. So that would cost $17/day! Some parking lots charge $10/day; depending, of course, when you are in town. During Fantasy Fest (last weekend of Oct.) that could go up to $50/day.
I would suggest renting the car one way from Miami, and then again one way from KW. Call the rental car company. They might be able to hold the car for the week.
Also, you might want to contact the Hilton and find out if there is a discount since you are staying on Sunset Key.
If you are planning on staying in the downtown area you don't really need transportation. Everything is very close. If you have to go to the other end of the island, a taxi will run about $10-$15 one way.
Hope this helps. Have fun! I know you will.

If you haven't already bought your plane tickets, I'd look at flying directly into Key West. Or at least flying home from Key West. That drive to the Miami airport when it's time to go home isn't near as much fun as the drive down the keys when you arrive.
