Mayflower Park Hotel in Seattle
This is the FIRST time I have been disappointed by a Fodors recommended hotel.
From the minute we were greeted at the front desk I had a clue that the hotel stay would be problematic. The front desk people could not sort out the two reservations with same last name. We then asked the Concierge for a lunch recommendation where we could get a salad. He sent us to a restaurant with only a dinner salad on the menu.
The hotel has only two elevators for guests and employees. One elevator was broken so the entire hotel was dependent on one elevator. We returned to the hotel at 10:00 p.m. to find that NONE of the elevators were working and we were expected to walk up 9 flights to our room. I recently had surgery and that prospect was undoable. The front desk people were unhelpful offering only to "move you to the Westin down the street." We would still have to climb 9 flights of stairs to get our luggage. After some back and forth, they found a room on the third floor and finally agreed to send an employee up to fetch our belongings from the 9th floor. When we suggested that our room for that night be credited, they looked surprised.
The internet is non-existent, the lightbulbs in the lamps burned out and when I left them on the table to be replaced, no replacement so the room was too dark to read. The Andaluca Restaurant served our breakfast with some of the items listed on the menu missing from the plate. When we checked out the front desk person could not find our reservation and required standing around waiting for them to figure out the charges.
There are lots of great hotels in downtown Seattle. The Mayflower Park is NOT one of them.

Thanks for the update. The Mayflower has been here as long as those of us who have lived the longest in Seattle can remember. It is considered a "classic."
I check hotel recommendations I get on Fodor's against reviews for the hotel on TripAdvisor, and TripAdvisor includes negative reviews for The Mayflower.
Also, when In doubt, I book at a hotel that is part of a chain of hotels which I know from experience maintains a level of service that pleases me. Sometimes it is better to stay at a Hampton Inn or at a Marriott than at a "classic" hotel.

PS Many years ago I had a menial job at a coffee shop located in the space that is now occupied by Andulaca. I was given no training, and I was treated badly. The job was made bearable by some jolly ladies in the kitchen who plied me with all the Dungeness crab I could eat and big bowls of mellon balls.
