It is a mob scene, but some people like "being there" nonetheless. That's reason enough for them to go. There are mega screens set up (at least in the past there have been) so you can see the action from the shore.

Just saw on the morning news that they are expecting the largest waves in the history of the event. They are encouraging people not to go out to the event, but to watch it on website or at ATT park.

Thirteen people who were standing on a seawall were injured this morning when they were hit by a rogue wave. Injuries were broken bones and bad cuts etc.

Chris Bertish from South Africa won the first place prize of $50,000. He said it might have been the largets wave he's ever surfed.
