Leaving in 15 days for Maui.. This trip will just be my husband and I. This will be our third time to Maui.. but first time without our children.. Can you fly from Maui to another Island for a day trip? Dont want to stay over night or maybe not even rent a car... any suggestions..... We are staying on Kaanapali Beach and would probably want to fly out of Kapalua Airport. Is it expensive? Has anyone taken the day trip to Lani using the Ferry? We will be much more mobile to travel the Island on this trip without our children.. They would much rather play on the beach than explore Maui in a car.. So this is our chance to see the Island by car... Any other suggestions for December trip to Maui would be appreciated... Mahalo!!!

They show flights and prices from Kapalua airport to various places, including Oahu, Lanai and Molokai.
Kapalua airport would be the most convenient, however those planes are prop planes. Out of OGG, you can get jet service to Oahu. Bus and taxi service is available at the Honolulu airport.

Will it be worth the trip for one day to visit another Island? Any suggestion whick island for the day? I was thinking of departing from Kapalua airport so we wouldnt have an hour drive each way from Kaanapali to Ogg. Thanks!

Inter-island flights are roughly $75-$85 per person via Aloha or Hawaiian. There is also a great excursion from the Maui -Lahaina harbor called Club Lanai - you ferry over and it is a day long party on the beach, but can also be quiet and relaxing if you want. Hammocks are everywhere and you can also go snorkeling during the day. You are confined to a large beach area, rather than going into town though, but alot of fun for a day.

I read somewhere that you can use frequent flyer miles on inter-island flights. We are flying with Delta, but I can't find any information on this. Anybody ever done this?

patter, not sure but i would imagine this would only work if your airline had a partnership with either aloha or hawaiian. i know that aloha is partnered with united. I don't think delta has a partnership with either airline. of course, i could be completely incorrect.

Inter-island flight can be very expensive but Kapalua airport is in close proximity to Kaanapali. First suggestion is to pick up a copy of Maui Revealed, available in bookstores, e bay, amazon. I saw them for sale at the Osco Drugs in Lahaina too. Invaluable tool which you can start reading now. The section on the Road to Hana is worth the price of the book alone. My wife and I took the road to Hana early and then continued around the island for a hike to the waterfalls above the Seven Sacred Pools.You can use the Park permit for both Haleakula and this park. This hike will take 2-3 hours but is quite worth it with well maintained trails and outrageous views along the way. We continued the southern road around the island winding back to the lower part of the Haleakula road at sunset. Also, north of Kaanapali check out the blow hole at high tide (tide tables are in the paper). We dressed warmly and left early (3:00 am) for the sunrise on Haleakula which was worth the drive. We rented out snorklin gear from Howie next door to the Maui Fish Market, and he sent us to the places where we saw sea turtles and mantas, and supplied very useful advice on beaches and currents.

What makes Maui so special to me is that every area offers its own special destination. If you have never really and truly explored the island, then I suggest you get in that rental and just drive and hike and snorkle and swim and daydream on secluded beaches. However, haven stayed 4 nights on Lanai, I think JohnD's trip is a worthy diversion. I love Lanai, and the snorkle trips just dont' offer you the island. I have topped his report. I think that or a trip to Molokai offers a truly special one day adventure. GL

I don't know about Delta, but I know that Northwest offers inter-island flights (via it's partner Aloha, I believe) for 5,000 miles round-trip. It's a very good deal. You can call Delta, 1-800-221-1212, and ask them if they have a similar deal, if that's where your frequent flier miles are.
