Maui in late April

Heading to Maui for a week at the end of April with two boys, ages 6 and 7. They are experienced travelers and we prefer to stay active on vacation.

Right now the plan is to spend 4-5 night at the Hyatt Regency and then 2 nights at the Courtyard back over near the airport. Originally I had 3 hotels planned, but was advised against that.

Basic plan:
Arrive on a Friday and head to hotel. Maybe play at the beach/pool and grab take out for dinner. The time change from NH may cause cranky kids.

Saturday/Sunday/Monday: one day visit the Maui Ocean Center and take the Atlantis underwater tour, one day drive 340 as far as Olivine Pools and then turn around before the single lane road starts, one day snorkel (where???, kids have no experience). We will also do a luau at our hotel.

Then we will leave the Hyatt and spend the day at Haleakala and spend the night at the Courtyard. Next day is RTH. Then home.

Thoughts?

I assume you're moving to the Courtyard to save time driving to Haleakala and the Road to Hana? Personally, I wouldn't move for that purpose - the Courtyard is an airport hotel, plain and simple, not where I'd want to stay on a vacation on a tropical island. If I were going to relocate, I'd probably move to Paia or Kihei (and I'm not a Kihei fan, although the beaches are very nice).

Since you're staying at the Hyatt Regency, you can snorkel at Black Rock (in front of the Sheraton, on the same stretch of Kaanapali Beach as the Hyatt).

I've never travelled with two boys 6 and 7

BUT

Spending two long days in the backseat of a car and then taking the long haul back to New England just is two much travel. Road trips aren't nearly as enjoyable from the back seat.

I also would not move to the Courtyard, just stay at the Hyatt. Do your sons get at all carsick? Not sure I would take them on the Road to Hana, it is a long drive with some curves and IIRC you only see the ocean for part of the way. Suppose you could drive a bit of it and turn back if they get bored.

No carsickness.

My thought with the Courtyard was it would cut off one hour of driving on each end of the RTH. My RTH plan was to drive directly to Pipiwai Trail and hike...they would love the banyan tree and bamboo. Then take the drive back slowly and stop wherever we feel like stopping.

I'll rethink my lodging....
