Maui in June 2012

Hello! Looking at traveling to Maui for our 10th anniversary. Thinking June but dates are flexible, so if there is a less expensive time to go, please let us know! We are interested in a condo with kitchenette to cook some of our own meals. We are interested in local activities...hiking/surf lesson/waterfalls/farmer market or swap meet? We don't wish to lay on the beach, but prefer to have oceanfront room...not interested in shopping or golf. Any recommendations of where to stay? Not to miss activities? Rental car company recommendations? Thanks!

You might consider the Maui Kai, very low key all oceanfront condos. It is located between Kaanapali and Kahana and Napili. You can contact the office to book www.mauikai.com or try VRBO www.vrbo.com. Also Donna Bender, owner of #807 can help locate a vacancy as well. http://www.vrbo.com/257252 I will be there over the memorial day holiday in one of the penthouse units Nearby is a nicer and pricier complex, the Mahana. http://themahana.com/ I have stayed at both properties and like both.

You definitely want a rental car, there is not much difference between the cars or companies, I just look for the best deal I can find, even try priceline and put in a ridiculously low price, sometimes I get it too.

Driving is my favorite activity, The west Maui mountains and the drive to Hana and Oheo Gulch are my favorites. I have done sunrise at Heleakala Crater too, but that means getting up very early! There are many water sport activities, like snorkeling available. Maui has lots to do.

Enjoy your trip

We have stayed at the Kaleialoha condos in West Maui #412 and would do it again. It is definiately ocean front and has everything you're looking for. They have other condos on lower floors, but we tend to stay higher. We tried to stay there again next month, but they were already booked so we're staying in #411 next door. check out alohacondos.com
You might want to look at www.wizardpub.com for actual locations of the condos you are interested in. It has some nice aerial photos that are helpful.

May would be less busy then June when the schools are out here one the Mainland. You might conwsider spending 3 or 4 days up toward Kanapali/Kapalua in a condo - then moving down Kiehi way for 3 or 4 days, unless you want to get weekly rate.

The Maui Kai is a nice - central type locaton for doing both.

Would consider taking the ferry from Lahaina over to Molokai/Lanai, getting up very early (3:30/4 am) to drive up and greet the sunrise at Halakea, taking a day to brave the 600 curves and drive out to Hana (again - start early, renting snorkel gear for a week if you don't bring your own mask and fins and just having fun.

Actually - I was thinking of a condo complex that is at the very north end of Kiehi - that sounds like Maui Kai, and is about 2 or 3? miles north of the Maui Sunset - where we first stayed back in '77. Actually - we enjoyed the Maui Sunset and there are so many others that have sprung up since then.

When we go to Maui, we love staying on the North Shore in Paia. It is a cute, laid back town with some good restaurants, funky shops, a kickin' natural foods grocery store, and great fresh fish at little Nagata Market. There is a little beach you can walk to for a swim, a beautiful Buddhist temple on the water (we attended a wonderful Obon festival there, but I think it was in July), and super friendly people with a bit of a yoga/ Magical Maui Hikes

Whoops- my computer went crazy and posted while I was trying to edit. Anyway, we love Paia town and enjoy driving across and around the island to the south shore beaches for sun, scuba, and body surfing, hiking on the Road to Hana and in the West Maui Mountains. We put on Manoa radio (public radio- so eclectic with great music) and smell the molassas smell from the sugar cane factory, then returning to Paia town for dinner and relaxing, with live music at Charley's.

We always stay at: http://www.mauibythesea.com/
It is an affordable cottage, on top of a carport (sounds tacky but it really isn't) overlooking the main house on the ocean with a beautiful view from the lanai. The house is very comfy, great for cooking and grilling, and they have a seating near the ocean for guests. The owner,Valerie, is very nice to work with. She is friendly but not intrusive and you feel very private up in the cottage among gorgeous greenery.

If you are interested in two really special hikes, search for my trip report Magical Maui Hikes.
