Snorkeling is great there! The west side of the island has the most and best snorkeling. And rent a car if you can to check out various snorkeling sites; it's easy driving on the island. What part of the island will you be staying at?

Must-see... the volcanic crater of Haleakala.

What to take with you... casual clothes for the beach.

I agree that the West side is a must for snorkeling. Saw turtles while snorkeling in the kaanapali area. Sheraton there is giving good deals due to slow-down in economy. Great snorkeling from their beach by the Black Rock. Avoid Paia due to theft problems there. Especially avoid Mama's Fish House and their valet service. Lost $2,500 worth of baggage from our trunk and our friend's trunk while eating lunch there...in broad daylight!

If you do visit Haleakala, especially if you go for the sunrise(which I rec doing the first day/morning you get there since the timezone diff will be in your favor)...be CERTAIN to take layered clothes for cold, cold weather. I know this sounds strange in HI but it REALLY is cold in the morning, in the wind and without the sun. I'm talking 30s F. Once the sun is up though, it will warm up quickly into the 50s/60s. Remember it's 10k up and Jan so rain is always a possibility too.

Tourist cars are easier to spot than "Maui cruisers" so do not leave ANYTHING of value in your rental. period. not even in the trunk...then you won't need to fear visiting anywhere. Makena (big beach), Paia and Mama's (anywhere actually) will be perfect to visit with this advise in mind. Mama's is, for most, a MUST b/c they have such fresh fish. It would be a shame to miss it due to theft fears.

Snorkeling is great off most any beach you will find in Wailea.

I rec DaKitchen for cheapish local food. There is one in Kihei as well as Kahului.
There is a smoothie stand next to the Rainbow mall (can't recall the name). A fast breakfast from there was expected fare (ie egg bagel sandwiches) but not greasy.
Other favs are Hali'imalie General Store and Cafe O'Lei. Make reservations for HGS, if going for dinner.

Can u tell I like food? enjoy yourself.
