Maui Blue Book: unsafe advice?
#41
I am not a friend of, nor am I acquainted with, the authors of the Blue Books. I do own two of them. I have no interest in visiting any of the disputed areas of the island. For myself, there are plenty of other sites to visit.
I have not, anywhere, even suggested that it's fine and dandy for tourists to trample over someone's private property. I have, and you must have missed this, Gyppielou, suggested that as it has become a big problem, the time may have come to do someone more proactive than complaining about a guide book. I have not attacked the residents of Maui. I do think that they seem to believe that banning and blaming this book and its authors will solve their problem.
I also said that the people who do all these annoying things are responsible for their own actions. What do you tell your kids when they tell you "everyone else is doing it"?
I make no secret of the fact that I live in San Diego, another heavily touristed area. Posters on this forum have recommended dangerous activities in my area to others, never mind guide books. It all boils down to one thing, taking responsiblity for one's own actions.
And, no, you can't make observations about the effect of said guide book unless you actually know what the book says. Not what somebody told you it says, but your own impression.
However, I do understand that it's much easier to attack me and patronize me rather than take a serious look at how to resolve a problem.

Very well said, Barbara. HereToday is one who is quick to jump on other posters if she feels they don't state things exactly as they should, based on absolute fact, as she professes to know it, but feels free to criticize authors and a book she hasn't read and makes assumptions about why people do the dumb things they do without knowing the facts.
