Marilyn Monroe subway scene.....

Hi all,
My sister and I coming to NYC next week and are wondering where they filmed that famous scene of Marilyn Monroe's skirt flying up, by a subway grate....my sister is a big Marilyn fan and this would be fun to see. Many thanks!! Dana in MN

From Wikipedia, but without a credible citation:

footage showing Monroe's dress clearly blowing above her waist was removed from the final movie because authorities considered it inappropriate, even though stills from this footage were used in print ads for the film. That particular footage was shot twice: The first take was shot at Manhattan's Lexington Avenue at 52nd Street and the second on a sound stage. The sound stage footage is what made its way into the final film, as the original on-location footage's sound had been rendered useless by the over excited crowd present during filming

Another account of the filming:

Just what I need to save me from doing more productive work, a trivia question.

My sources (one Graham Smith, University of St. Andrews) maintains it was at 51st st and Lexington Avenue, outside 'Wrights Food'. Whether the store really existed, or whether the grate still exists I don't know. Apparently a giant blower was used to simulate the subway breeze.

All you ever didn't need to know, you can learn on Fodor's.....
