mar del rey vs manhattan beach

Both areas are in the affluent west-facing beach area of LA and safety is not an issue. Manhattan Beach is more of a residential-type area, the beach itself having more quaint shops and lots of foot traffic. The "Strand" walkway along this beach is one of the premiere places to see and be seen, if you know what I mean.
MDR is also upscale, but more of a commercial type area and not residential. Where MB has homes, MDR has high-rise upscale condos, etc. No foot traffic in MDR like there is in MB as there is no beach... it's a Marina.
Great restaurants in both areas. MDR is much more accessible to the rest of LA, there is a freeway that leads you right into it. Assuming you are staying near the beach, Manhattan is less accessible, a good 10 minute surface street drive between the freeway and the coast.

One consideration is that the MB Marriott is located in office park-land two or three miles from the beach, whereas the MDR Marriott (which we've stayed at cheap via Priceline) is across the street from the marina and a block from Washington Blvd. (many restaurants, etc.) on the other side. At the Manhattan Marriott there are maybe two or three restaurants walkable, including a Wolfgang Puke and a Quiznos. Whoopee. IN MDR, Washington Blvd. leads into Venice, walkable from the hotel (longish walk, maybe.) For a tourism visit, I'd go with MDR, and I'd try Priceline, too. Don't expect the nicest hotel in the world, but okay.

Marina del Rey CAN be dangerous as you are surrounded on all sides by not-so-great areas (including Vencie, which has a problematic GANG problem as well), so DO be careful, especially at night! (I would highly recommend Laguna Beach instead, if that's possible for you)!

MDR is one of the nicest areas within the city limits of LA and to say it is "surrounded on all sides" by bad areas is completely paranoid.
Laguna Beach? Wha?! It's two hours away from the city! Suggesting LB as an alternative to MB or MDR is ridiculous, tantamount to suggesting that someone stay in Connecticut because downtown Manhattan is surrounded by bad areas.

I am partial to Manhattan Beach myself. If feels more like a local surf town, and I think is better for hanging out and people watching than MDR (because of all the foot traffic).
But if you have to stay at a Marriott, and want to be withing walking distance of everything, maybe MDR is better, since as John says, the MB Marriott is a couple miles from downtown MB. I've checked out the MDR Marriott though (we were going to have a sales meeting there) and I didn't think it was that nice.
If you don't mind driving a short bit to the cute areas of Manhattan Beach (Hermosa nearby, is also nice), I vote for MB. The beach is one of the nicest in the LA area, IMHO!

"Monthrash," you know perfectly well that what I'm saying is 100% true and not paranoia at all! I have to assume you're from NY City where ANYPLACE would seem like paradise in comparison, especially MDR, which is NOT the great heaven it's made out to be (there's more crime in the area than you're willing to admit and YOU know why!)!! Are you also forgetting the GANG problems in Culver City as well?!? As for Laguna Beach, I made that recommendation because I wanted the poster to go someplace OUT of the LA area, period!!

MANHATTAN BEACH by far. It is a true surf town, with a couple of excellent surfing spots, and a nice pier, and wonderful shops and restaurants. Marina Del Rey beaches SUCK. Mothers Beach in MDR is always listed as one of the most polluted in the state. Manhattan Beach is FANTASTIC. Marina Del Rey is all about style, but there is little substance there. More for sailors then surfers.
