if you type "riverside tower hotel" into the search box, you'll see lots of posts , mostly from a few years ago. All say the place is a dump. The neighborhood is very nice, but I have also heard bad things about this place. I suspect it is not really a legitimate hotel but that a building with many permanent residents is renting some of the rooms to transients.
If the rates are as low as I've seen them advertised($100 per night?) remember this--Buyer beware. There is just no way a decent, clean place could charge that amount in NYC...

The place is an absolute dump. You'd be better sleeping in the park. Do NOT go there.

If you're looking for an inexpensive room, the Pod Hotel in midtown is sometimes a decent option although the least expensive rooms have shared bathroom. If you need to be on the upper west side, the Newton hotel is the least expensive but still ok option.

Agree not to touch Riverside Towers with a barge pole.

The rates at the Newton can be very good if you go for a shared bath - and although it is very basic it is clean and reliable. And practically on top of the 96th St subway stop - with a lot of good inexpensive restaurants in the area.
