There is an art museum (maybe gallery) in Manhattan which was someone's mansion, is open for public to stay in the room(s) overnight with breakfast. Does anyone know the name of the place? Thanks!

That would be the Frick Museum. They also provide butler and car service to their guests, and the prices are quite reasonable.

Now this urban legend has some oomph.

I called both Frick and Morgan, they don't offer accommodation. I asked if they knew any other museum/library/gallery did it, I was told 41 Madison and the Library Hotel. I checked out the websites. 41 Madison appears to be a very commercial place; the Library Hotel IS a hotel...

Any other possibility? Thanks!

But in case you haven't guessed, all other suggestions here were jokes, and we'd all be VERY suprised if any other working MUSEUM allowed overnight guests.
I saw on some TV new program here once that there is a small gallery in Soho that has a room upstairs that is rented out. Not a mansion, but...

It must be the best kept secret in town then. I heard this from Frommer (the owner of Frommers). She even mentioned the street, which is one of the best known streets in Manhattan. I do regret not writing it down...

This thread is too funny.

There is a turn of the century mansion, in the French Renaissance style, on Fifth Ave. and 79th Street.
Only three families have lived there and it is currently the Ukrainian Art Institute. During OpenHouseNY, you can tour the mansion (the interior is entirely original) and see where the families lived and other parts of the building that are normally closed to the public.

Alas, no overnight stays.
