Maine or Vermont for a short honeymoon

My daughter and her fiance are looking for a place to stay in ME or VT. They prefer the coast and also a not so long drive to the mountains for some hiking. Maybe 4 or 5 star type place?
Thx

VT doesn't have a coast so I guess rule that out. It's not really a 5* type of state, either, there aren't really any deluxe hotels in the state that I can think of. I guess the top resort might be the Stowe Mtn Lodge if you want to look into that, but of course there is no coast. That's the best idea I can think of for Vermont. Maybe Woodstock Inn, also.

A friend and her husband used to make a yearly visit to the Samoset Resort in Rockland. The Yelp reviews are mixed but mostly very positive. Hiking in Camden/Mt Battie isn't far. It's one of our favorite mid-coast areas to visit but we don't stay at resorts. They might look at Camden places if they don't want a full resort. It would be a day trip to Acadia from Camden but doable. I have stayed at Glenmoor-by-the-Sea in nearby Lincolnville but not recently.

Someplace in the Portland ME area would be about an hour's drive from NH's White Mountains/Conway area.

Portland or Bethel are both within "commuting" distance of the Presidential Range of the White Mountains in New Hampshire.

Portland has great ocean access, including the ferries that serve all the local islands just like busses. The best goes all the way to Bailey's Island for a lobster lunch. Very relaxing, and you can fly directly to Portland.

Bethel has "village green" New England charm, a big ski resort for lodging, and lots of mountain scenery.

If their focus is more toward the water, Camden and Rockland or Brunswick-Bath are two good locales. I didn't like the Samoset resort in Rockland because it was "golfy" but others might. There are several good museums in Rockland.

We did enjoy the Hartstone Inn in Camden. They have several buildings in the middle of downtown, good food, and are very accommodating. Nice people. They booked a windjammer cruise for us AND made us a lunch to take along. I would book sooner rather than later and be sure to tell them it is for a honeymoon. Some rooms are better than others for honeymooners. Lots of places to eat in Camden.

;-) there's no ocean in Vermont.

But that would be my pick because it's my favorite state ever. Just gorgeous.

But what time of year??

If you'd like to stay in downtown Portland, I can recommend the Press Hotel. Trip Advisor gives it 4 stars.

VT has Lake Champlain and smaller lakes, no ocean.
There are certainly 5* resorts in VT. The Equinox in Manchester, Twin Farms in Barnard, Von Trapp Lodge near Stowe are some of them.

Portland is great and has some nice B and B's as does a few other coastal towns close to Portland. Also, not really mountainous, but they do have some good hiking around the coast.
