Maine Islands

My wife and I will be visiting Maine in the middle of September to celebrate my 50th. Hopefully the weather will be OK. We will be based out of Portland and have would like to plan a day trip to an island. Do anyone have a recommendation?

What are you looking to do when you get to the island? Some are very quiet and only offer hiking...

Some (basic) hiking & birdwatching. Also, an island with a restaurant or two would be nice.

Or Peaks. This small island has a paved road going all around the perimeter - just beautiful.

Check the ferry schedules at www.cascobaylines.com. You might be able to get to more than one stop. All of these islands are quite close to Portland.

Thanks to all of you. I narrowed it down to Chebeague and Peaks. I just need to make sure that the resturant(s) will still be open.
