Maine Coastal Summer Trip 2012

Planning July trip to Coastal Maine. Starting at Cadillac Mt and working are way down. (Will come across state from Vermont) Would love to go on boat tour. Any recommendation? Love history and local events too.

Map out the lobster shacks. Google Maine lobster roll and you'll probably find the article about the best places.
Check out light house cruises at Maritime Museum in Bath. If you are there early in the month, Bath Heritage Days has a huge parade, craft fair, etc.
When you are crossing the state, I suspect you might get near or go thru Bangor. Look for Coles Transportation Museum. It's more about work vehicles than Owls Head Transportation Museum. Check to see when Leonard's Mills Logging Museum is having an event. But, when OHT does weekend events, they sometimes get antique airplanes that fly. At Coles, look for photos of Lombard Log Hauler. Maine is more than the coast and the lumber industry history is fascinating.
Ackislander posted a nice list. We did the regular mailboat cruise out of Portland that stops at islands in Casco Bay. Not a lot of narration but enough.
Check out list of farmers markets. The one in Brunswick is very good but I've read of some that include ethnic food stands.
Keep your eyes peeled for little signs about benefit suppers. We lucked into a lobster benefit supper held outdoors under tents.
Culinary tour of Portland ME around the Old Port District is great. Very foodie city and great food samples.

Thank you for some great detail list. I know there is much to see and do in Maine. Only have a week yet really looking forward to some of your suggestions.

While you're on Mt. Desert Island you might want to consider taking the boat tour to the Cranberry Isles and Somes Sound that leaves out of Northeast Harbor. It's incredibly scenic and interesting.
