Monticello has been one of the places I’ve always wanted to see since I was a kid. On this day, we’d finally get there (after a great breakfast and one of the best b&bs we've ever stayed) and take a very interesting and informative tour. Who knew that Jefferson was the first American to create an ice cream recipe? And was a coffee addict? We’d then head down the road a few miles to check in on Jefferson’s friend James Monroe. We’d also visit a statue that was the center of controversy the previous year. Couple all that with some gorgeous countryside and a delicious lunch in Charlottesville, it was yet another intriguing day on my 8th grade field trip … 53 years after the fact. Today we visited James, Dolley, Barack and Michelle.
Well, we still had a few more presidents to see on the Magical History Tour. We started off the day with a stop at the house where James and Dolley Madison lived in Montpelier, Virginia. Tracy and I actually enjoyed this tour even better than Jefferson’s Monticello. Dolley was a fascinating person, and their story is an interesting one. Then we passed up the opportunity to find a buried Confederate's arm, but did find his memorial on the way to Washington DC. We stayed at an historic hotel and hurried over to the National Portrait Gallery to check out a couple of new additions. Cocktails in our hotel’s retro bar and dinner in a deluge ended our long day. Only one day to go!
Day Eight – Please … No Monty Python Reference, Home James, Hello Dolley, Better Than Monticello?, It’s A Small World, Tracy’s Pen Goes Wild, A Farewell To Arm, The Lone Ranger, The President & First Lady, A Nice Place For A Cocktail and Any Port (or White Wine) in a Storm

We had reached the final day of our long overdue 8th grade field trip for adults, and we’d make the most of it. We started off at the National Geographic Museum. Among other things, we would take a 3-D journey to Jerusalem that the museum is offering through the end of the year, and check out some other Nat-Geo exhibits. Next, we'd visit the largest Roman Catholic Church in North America where I had a chat with the pope. All that walking would make us hungry, so we’d have lunch at the oldest saloon in Washington DC. We’d conclude our day at the hottest ticket in town, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture. It was the perfect ending to a terrific trip. Great weather, fantastic food and historical site after historical site made for a fun and enlightening nine days.

Another great chapter. We stayed at The River Inn this weekend because it was walking distance to the Kennedy Center where we saw Hamilton. We had two good meals there, breakfast and pre theater dinner. They have a great bartender.
