Never saw this post, handmaiden. Don't know if you realize they serve soups and sandwiches in the cafe in the lobby of the theater.

Honmura An is a half block away on Mercer b/w Houston & Prince. Outstanding Japanese (soba and noodles). Not open for lunch Mon/Tues
If you walk south to Prince St., you'll find a bunch of places from Mercer Kitchen to Zoe, Woo Lae Oak (Korean)
Jane is a good option too. It's about 3-4 blocks west of the theater on Houston b/w La Guardia & Thompson.
The Noho Star is a few blocks north on Lafayette and Bleecker.

Arturo's has great pizza a few blocks up Houston at Thompson.
Balthazar is a few blocks away at Spring and Broaday (make reservations).
Go to www.menupages.com to look up menus for these places as well as mclaurie's excellent suggestions.

Got to go with lizzie and her Balthazar suggestion. For me, if I'm in the area, it would be hard to pass up on one of the better bistro's outside of France, especially as there's also a good chance of availability of a walk-in table on a weekday lunch.
Arturo's is pretty good, too. Another good pizza option is Lombardi's in the same street on Balthazar in Spring.

Thanks. (I meant to make a smiley face above
) Can you eat at the bar at Balthazar? (I was there about 4 years ago, but can't remember much except that the food was good and it was VERY noisy.)
I don't want to make a reservation because of time constraints and my daughter's schedule. I was thinking we could do Balthazar if we sat at the bar and ate lunch.

Yes, my only rant wabout Balthazatr is the noise factor.
Anyway, twice this year we walked in and got tables for 2 for a Saturday (!)brunch and a weekday lunch. We' would have considered the bar, but they offered us a table when we walked in to inquire.
It wouldn't hurt to call ahead for a reservation (just cancel it if you can't make it).
