luggage storage in Manhattan
I just thought that I would share a little information about storing luggage in New York. If you have bags that you need to "put" somewhere for a short period of time so that you can enjoy seeing New York without dragging things around, try Schwartz Travel Services, located on 36th St betwen 8th & 9th St,(212-290-2626). We were arriving for the day into NY by train into Penn Station, and then departing for Newark airpot for a night flight, and needed to store our two bags. The people at Schwartz were friendly and competent. The storage facility is located on the second floor of the building (with elevator), not fancy by any means but convenient and cost us $20 total for two bags. They offer a very needed service, esp for people who are not staying in NY and therefor are not elibible for storing baggage at a hotel. I had emailedl several hotels prior to finding Schwartz and none of them would agree to keep the bags due to security reasons.

I didn't know about Schwartz. Thanks very much. I plan to add this information to our book Carribean Ports of Call, and I'll give you some credit. People always ask where they can put luggage after a cruise before a later departing flight.

For luggage storage near Grand Central Station in midtown Manhattan: Today while walking along East 45th Street between Second and Third Avenues, I noticed two places with signs that they will store luggage. I think one was a cleaners and the other a photo place; not sure on that part, but they are certainly convenient to the station. Both on south side of 45th Street.

I just stored luggage for the day at Penn Station, it's $10. All you need is an Amtrak ticket (I don't think it even has to be one for departure later on, but arrival is ok). So using that service wouldn't be any better than just using Penn Stn where you arrived unless that location is somehow a whole lot more convenient.
Even non Amtrak customers can use it, it just costs $20 instead of $10.
Grand Central isn't an Amtrak Stn, I believe, that's why they don't have this service.
