Luaus on Kauai

There are numerous luau offerings on Kauai. Any inputs from those who have attended a luau in Kauai would be most appreciated.

We attended the Princeville Hotel Luau in September. Very well done. Offered 1-2 nights/week. Setting right on beach at Hanalei Bay. The Hyatt Regency Luau would be a good choice too. Stay away from Radisson luau

Here is another option. When I was in Hawaii, there was a Luau put on by the locals, benefiting a children's charity. It was held at a public park. It was hardly fancy, but it was neat to hang out with the locals.

Here is a calendar of local events:

We attended a FABULOUS luau at Smith's Tropical Paradise Botanical Gardens on 11/20. (By the Wailua marina on the east shore of the Island.) The Moon Travel guide recommended this as the best luau on the island, and I agree with them. A buffet dinner is served in a separate outside dining room, with live musical entertainment. Afterward, attendees are led into an amphitheater that is situated in a lagoon, with the stage surrounded by water.

There's an exploding volcano on stage and the performace showcases native cultures around the pacific rim. The show has a huge cast: nine hula women and several men all in gorgeous costumes. The live band was excellent.

Since we stayed at the Hyatt Regency, we checked out their luau as well. It's very nice, but it's set on a makeshift stage, with a much smaller cast. The show is on a smaller scale overall, although it was a nice luau nonetheless.

I have alway followed the suggestions in the Ultimate Guide to Kauai that tells you there are no great luaus on Kauai. If you have even been to a single luau you might want to head this advice.

We stayed at the Princeville last year and had every intention of going to the luau. However, when we saw that it took place on the concrete patio by the pool and guests were seated at long tables on plastic chairs, it lost its appeal, to us.
