Lost Katrina dolphins = military trained, anti-terrorist Flippers?
Sweet segment this morning on the Today show about a stranded dolphin in 4 feet of water 3 miles inland - discovered during an on-camera interview. They are calling in help to see if they can rescue the guy.
So, I googled to see if there was any news on this - and found a few postings that the missing dolphins in the gulf after Katrina are/ were Navy trained military dolphins trained to shoot darts at terrorists (from special harnesses) and conduct spy activities.
Is this real? Has anyone else heard anything about this? If it is, it sure is stranger than fiction - or Maxwell Smart's shoe phone. I remember seeing them rounding up six dolphins off the shore in MS, but I thought those were aquarium dolpins.
One article asked if Gulf swimmers will be safe? Truly strange.

The story comes from The Guardian - an unimpeachable impartial source if ever there was one - and quotes some unnamed sources, which of course are always reliable. It also makes it pretty clear that they're not talking about the 8 dolphins from the Gulfport aquarium but some other group of dolphins that escaped from . . . oh, they don't seem to mention where. LOL

Anonymous - wonder what other "tricks" these military Flippers know that don't require special equipment?
I've had "friendly" dolphins swim around me in the ocean. It would freak me out to know there's a renegade guy out there goosing me!

Great article -
Sea lions too -
Sea lions are used by the Navy to retrieve submerged objects, and have also been trained to locate enemy divers, attach restraint devices or markers, and make a speedy getaway.

How funny - I am right now in the middle of a book (forget the title) in which one of the main plots deals with dolphins trained by the Navy to plant explosive devices and do other spy activities - and how one of them escapes.

yea- Katie lost me as a viewer during the buildup to war "I Think Navy Seals Rock" days.
Had Katie and some of her buddies in the MSM actually done their jobs we might not be sending soldiers home in body bags
The information was out there, but reporters like Matt and Katie chose the easy route and let America down.

Off topic I know but Greenfieldhunter you need to realize that neither Couric or her sidekick are *reporters*.
At best they are news readers. At worse they are merely personalities.
I am sure she is very nice but I do admit that when she's wearing those pointy-toed high-heel shoes it makes her calfs look like they belong to the Governor of CA!
