Lost Katrina dolphins = military trained, anti-terrorist Flippers?

Sweet segment this morning on the Today show about a stranded dolphin in 4 feet of water 3 miles inland - discovered during an on-camera interview. They are calling in help to see if they can rescue the guy.

So, I googled to see if there was any news on this - and found a few postings that the missing dolphins in the gulf after Katrina are/ were Navy trained military dolphins trained to shoot darts at terrorists (from special harnesses) and conduct spy activities.

Is this real? Has anyone else heard anything about this? If it is, it sure is stranger than fiction - or Maxwell Smart's shoe phone. I remember seeing them rounding up six dolphins off the shore in MS, but I thought those were aquarium dolpins.

One article asked if Gulf swimmers will be safe? Truly strange.

LOL, if they didn't take their weapons and harnesses with them, we'll be OK.

The story comes from The Guardian - an unimpeachable impartial source if ever there was one - and quotes some unnamed sources, which of course are always reliable. It also makes it pretty clear that they're not talking about the 8 dolphins from the Gulfport aquarium but some other group of dolphins that escaped from . . . oh, they don't seem to mention where. LOL

So is this stranded dolphin covering for the International Man of Mystery?...maybe he got tired of swimming with people and decided the storm was his chance to hang w/the fellas :D

I don't know why but I think I read somewhere that the Navy Seals use dolfins to help them. Wouldn't surprise me at all.

Anonymous - wonder what other "tricks" these military Flippers know that don't require special equipment?

I've had "friendly" dolphins swim around me in the ocean. It would freak me out to know there's a renegade guy out there goosing me! :-)

Amazing!

Dolphins are used for procedures by Navy Seals just as canine forces are used by the Army and land forces.

They are used for more than spying/camera etc. They are involved in rescue and other types of training operations.

Great article -
Sea lions too -
Sea lions are used by the Navy to retrieve submerged objects, and have also been trained to locate enemy divers, attach restraint devices or markers, and make a speedy getaway.

Does anyone have a link to starrsville's story? I missed it this morning because I couldn't take any more of Matt Lauer or Katie Couric.

Johanna1 Sep 27th, 2005 06:47 AM

Yes, please, a link would be great!

We also had to change the channel from Katie and Matt...Katie especially is just too annoying anymore!

Just Google:

Navy trained military dolphins trained shoot darts terrorists

and you'll get pages of links to the story, which has been widely repeated and quoted.

katie couric is one of my closest friends. nobody who actually knows her would speak poorly of her. tisk tisk.

chepar Sep 27th, 2005 09:19 AM

How funny - I am right now in the middle of a book (forget the title) in which one of the main plots deals with dolphins trained by the Navy to plant explosive devices and do other spy activities - and how one of them escapes.

GoTravel Sep 27th, 2005 09:19 AM

wannabeme, I'm not speaking of Katie Couric as a person but as a newsperson. I have heard she is lovely in person and I am sure she is.

TheWeasel Sep 27th, 2005 09:35 AM

I hope they're recruiting the archer fish for the Navy too. They're pretty good at shooting bugs out of the trees, so I'm sure we could put their skills to good use.

greenfieldhunter Sep 27th, 2005 09:37 AM

yea- Katie lost me as a viewer during the buildup to war "I Think Navy Seals Rock" days.

Had Katie and some of her buddies in the MSM actually done their jobs we might not be sending soldiers home in body bags

The information was out there, but reporters like Matt and Katie chose the easy route and let America down.

Off topic I know but Greenfieldhunter you need to realize that neither Couric or her sidekick are *reporters*.

At best they are news readers. At worse they are merely personalities.

I am sure she is very nice but I do admit that when she's wearing those pointy-toed high-heel shoes it makes her calfs look like they belong to the Governor of CA!
