Looking to get engaged in Washington, DC

My girlfriend and I will be travelling to Washington, DC in November. I am looking to ask her to marry me there. Does anyone have any suggestions of a great place to pop the question? Please let me know.

Are you looking for someplace romantic or more historical or both? I love the idea of an engagement on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial but then again, I love history.

In my opinion, the most romantic spot in DC is at night, around the FDR memorial. Walk down to the water ont he edge of the tidal basin. There is a beautiful view of DC, inlcuding the Jefferson memorial and the Washington Monument, from there. Or, you could go to the Jefferson Monment, and look out over the tidal basin from there.

That was my idea of a perfect proposal location....although DH did a good job setting up his proposal in New York.

I like the Jefferson Memorial - it really is pretty at night...or during the day... Also, possibility of popping the question in one of the thousands of great restaurants there. You don't mention where you're staying, but where ever it is, I'm sure there are elegant restaurants near it (or fun ones - if that's better for you).

The Kennedy Center has a beautiful balcony where you can look out into Virginia and at the Potomac River and parts of DC. It's always been quite a favorite of mine. The Lincoln and jefferson Memorials are also very special places.

Good luck!!

Ditto on the Jefferson Memorial. Illuminated in a lovely way at night and a little more off the beaten path than the Lincoln and FDR memorials. But there are many great places in DC. Consider these: The Old Angler's Inn on the C&O Canal in Potomac, MD. (www.oldanglersinn.com). This is a very romantic old restaurant with a fireplace. Another idea would be to get bikes and go out to Mt. Vernon, George Washington's home. Very pretty there. The National Gallery of Art has many pretty sites: sculpture garden, the West Garden Court in the West Building, or simply in front of one of the beautiful, romantic paintings or sculpture. Another pretty spot if the weather is fine is/are the gardens at Dumbarton Oaks, on the fringe of Georgetown. They have a Lovers' Lane Pool with an amphitheatre around it. (www.doaks.org) The National Cathedral is, literally, awesome. Good luck with it all. You've picked a great city in which to pop the question!

Do you know if you'd rather do it during the day or at night? In a restaurant or out in nature? Secluded or share your moment with others? My suggestions will vary dramatically depending on what kind of scene you envision!

We did a sunset cruise along the Potomac - that would be really romantic.

Old Anglers Inn is very romantic but their food is terrible. I've had better food at chain restaurants for a fraction of their cost.

I agree we need more info.
