Looking For That Certain Hotel In NYC

Two families need four rooms for knickerbocker holiday on December 1-3. Will stay anywhere in Manhattan but preference for Soho, Tribecca or Little Italy. Want to spend $300 to $350 per night. Old world charm would be nice but so would Soho chic and the ultimate criteria is a good nite's sleep. hotels.com seems more of an obstacle than a help in this endeavor. . . any suggestions anyone. Thanks!

Is that $300-350 per room or a total for each night.

Well, December is the busiest and most expensive time of year in NYC - so for that amount you are going to be limited to budget hotels - which may well be short on charm and chic.

Also - needing 4 rooms is going to make it difficult in the budget category which tends to sell out early for December.

My two suggestions are to check out the applecore group - which get reasonably good reviews for budget hotels. They're showing some availability for $329 plus tax.

Also - you might check quikbook.com to see what they have available.

If you're really looking for charm and/or chic - even in the moderate range - you're looking at $500 to $600 per night per room.

Hotels.com would be a good place to start, at least you would get some ideas of the costs of rooms for the time you will be here, less sticker shock that way.

I would suggest the Grand Union on E 32nd and the Apple Inn on 8th Ave. Both well priced and nicely appointed. The Apple Inn has a lobby area, with books you can read and relax.

I just did a quick browse through the first few pages of the hotels.com results for those dates. I don't see anything under $350 per night (and remember, taxes will add about 15%) where you would be remotely happy staying. Even the Hotel Penn (yuck!) is $400.

If you are able to up your budget, let us know what it is and you may get some good input. Otherwise, search here for NYC budget hotels and start going through them one by one to see if you can find a deal. It's unlikely, but maybe a miracle will occur . . .

I did see On the Ave at hotels.com for $399. It gets pretty good reviews (but is considered a moderately budget hotel from what I understand), and is on the Upper West Side.

Have you checked hotwire? I don't know if they'll have anything, but you might have some luck. You can use the assistance at www.betterbidding.com to help you figure out what the hotel might be after you search and before you accept the offer.

Unfortunately, your areas of choice have the lowest concentration of hotels of any neighborhoods in all of NYC, so you're not being very realistic in your search. And most of the "SoHo chic" hotels you seem to prefer will be far more than $350 a night in early December. The suggestion for trying one of the Apple Core Hotels is also a good one. Or perhaps you should look at one of the Affinia suite hotels and see if you can get 2-bedroom suites in the $700 range, though I think that's unlikely.

There's a Holiday Inn in Chinatown that might be $350 a night for that period. There's also a Howard Johnson on West Houston. Those are the only two downtown hotels I can think of that might be in your range. You might look for hotels way downtown. The Embassy Suites or Millennium Hilton sometimes have decent weekend rates, though you are making your arrangements very late in the game to get a good hotel at a good price for that weekend. I'd concentrate my search on Expedia or Travelocity and forget Hotels.com. Everything books up fast during that period.

If you can get On the Ave for $399 I would grab it. This is much more pleasant than the applecore group. And the neighborhood is a great one. Uptown - rather than downtown - but outside of the midtown madness, has lots of great inexpensive restaurants and good, fast transit to almost anywhere in the city.

I don't know a lot of hotels in NYC, except the Embassy Suites is a good family choice, and it includes a full, hot breakfast. Not in SoHo, though. Also, the Affinia group has some nice hotels. We had a two bedroom, two bath suite last May, for about $630 at the Affinia Gardens, on the Upper Eastside. It seems like a well-managed 'chain'.

The first weekend in Dec. is perhaps the costliest of the year for hotels. So without worrying about price for the moment, here are some names of hotels in the downtown area you prefer.

Soho
Soho Grand, 60 Thompson, the Mercer, Clarion Solita Soho

Tribeca
The Cosmopolitan (cosmohotel.com) is a budget hotel
Tribeca Grand

Embassy Suites is a good idea if you want to be downtown.

Bevy's Soho loft is a funky place. Not all rooms have private bath but maybe she'd be able to house all of you.

Some other thoughts

Four Points Sheraton in Chelsea
Hampton Inn Chelsea
Inn on 23 st.

Some other inns around town
1871house.com
wymanhouse.com
abingdonguesthouse.com (the village)

The Affinia group of hotels (affinia.com) is 7 all suite hotels scattered around midtown. Best simple option imo but may not be affordable. All of the good budget suite hotels (Radio City apts., the Salisbury, Best Western Hospitality) seem to be already booked.

An apartment rental is another possibility. Look on
vrbo.com
Here's a 3 bedroom 3 bath apt. for $850/night
http://www.vrbo.com/54031
cyberrentals.com
Here's a 4 bed/4bath penthouse.

Here's a 3 bed/3bath

There are lots of other apt. rental websites. Just avoid anything with the name Woogo on it. If you decide on an apt. rental, try to check here for location, co. etc.

The Wall Street Inn is $299 per night on Quikbook.com and I'd jump all over that.

Even the Newark Ramada is $300 per night that weekend. I'd stay in hell first before I'd stay at Newark Airport.

We got a rate of 390 in December for a corner King at the Soho Grand by signing up for the Grand guest discount (free). There were cheaper rooms too. Have you tried going through the hotel directly?
