Looking for somewhere unusual to stay in Maui
My husband and I are stopping in Maui on our way back home to Cambodia next month and looking for a hotel to stay in.
Since we're used to ridiculously low prices in SE Asia, we're aware there will be a huge sticker shock so we're hoping to find something below $150/night near a beach.
We'd prefer not to be in a touristy place -- i.e. huge building, lots of fancy amenities, pool parties or mai tai specials (!) and would like to find something a little more intimate, yet still on (or close to) a beach.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Fiddely foo infinity: Lost another post trying to retreive a web page - so here it is without further acclaim: http://www.napilisunset.com/
It's on a lovely - fairly quiet beach - north of lahaina - and should be in your price range.

We recently spent 2 nights in a 2 bedroom garden cottage at Mama's Fish House Inn. I know that they have smaller, lower priced accommodations but I don't know the price. This was a unique and beautiful property on the north shore, just outside of Paia. We loved it.

Napili SUnset is nice but $100-150 more/nuight than hte OP requested.
We stayed at the King Suite at Cliff's Edge which is REALLY quiet, down a private oad. Now it's $185/night.

Here's another place to consider. We stayed at the Hana Hotel for 4 nights, and then these Nona Lani cottages for another 4, at about 1/4 the price. http://www.nonalanicottages.com/hotel-overview.html
It's been a few years, but we thought it was just fine for the price (it was $69 then, and it's $99 now).
Napili Sunset looks charming. I'm a Big Island semi-resident, so I don't go to Maui often.

It has been several years, but we have been to the Nonalani Cottages Kailani linked to above. If you want to avoid sticker shock, this is a good bet. The cottages are not as dark as they appear in the photos on that site and are clean and comfortable. The nearby beach mentioned on the website is actually across the road and lots of windsurfers were in evidence when we were there. There are even nicer beaches just a short drive away. The grounds have gorgeous flowering trees and other plantings that we saw young women using to make leis. If you want to keep expenses down, shop the local fish markets and use the outdoor grills for the fresh catch of the day then top the fish with fresh made fruit salsas you concoct with the local produce!

You can also try a vrbo (www.vrbo.com) condo in Wailea, like Wailea Ekahi. Ekahi is not directly on the beach but truly less than a 5 min walk. I live on that beach so I've not stayed there but recently was in one of the condos with a friend visiting. nice with a kitchenette, balcony and often with pool toys for when the wind picks up in the afternoon. The condos are individually owned so check out what each one provides (some have A/C, most don't need it, all have access to a pool, some are a further walk to the beach than others, etc)

Look at some of the B&Bs available. Here is one we considered (but have not stayed there yet) - http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...ui_Hawaii.html

Won't you be flying in and out of HNL? Try North Shore Oahu -- around Haleiwa or Turtle Bay.
For Maui -- Upcountry or Paia? (Trouble with Hana is getting to a place and back again on that long, twisting road.)
You need to book a rental car NOW. Summer is very busy in Hawaii!
