Looking for Some Peace and Quiet
Being city dwellers, my bf and I are looking for a nice, quiet place to spend a 3-day weekend in September. I will be living in New York, he will be in DC.
We're open to driving or flying, but would rather not go too far as we are only planning on being away for three days.
We enjoy the beach, the woods and jsut about everything in between.
Additionally, I think that we'd like to stay away from hotels and rent something along the lines of a cabin or a villa or something.
And finally, though I'm posting this in the US, we're open for going pretty much anywhere, though we'd like to keep the trip reasonably priced (let's say no more than $500 pp for all three days including transportation)
Thoughts?? Suggestions??

Suggest you have a look on vrbo.com (vacation rental by owner) for starters and check the states inbetween you 2 and see what's available for the time you want.
Pawley's island would be nice but don't know how easy it is to get there for a weekend.

Know the perfect place for you and it is only a 3 hour drive from DC. Also know the perfect cabin for you to rent.
Canaan Valley (including the towns of Davis and Thomas) in West Virginia. Goto http://www.canaanvalley.org/
There is a lot to do & see - too much for me to list here... great hiking, go to the Purple Fiddle for lunch (quirky neat place), see the Blackwater Falls, check out WV crafts at Mountainmade, see the windmills, hike Dolly Sods. Deer everywhere and you may even get a bear in your yard(don't be scared - our bears are more afraid of you unless you are between it and its cubs).
Also, September is peak fall leave season in WV.

I recommend renting the cabin in Old Timberline (a gated community but cabins are not on top of each other) called Blackwater 15/Alpine Sunrise (sits on 5 acres). No, I don't own it but know where it is - fantastic location. Sits on the conservancy in front of the lake and faces the mountains across the lake. There is a path in front of it that goes around the lake. Will be glad to tell you more about Old Timberline, etc. if you are interested.
To see this cabin, Goto http://www.ridgeviewtechnologies.com/trr/ Scroll down and click on Old Timberline Rentals, click on Blackwater 15/Alpine Sunrise.
To see more of it, click on Additional Photos area. On the page that pops up, hold mouse over different areas of floor plan and you can see pictures of each section.
Many people from DC and surrounding area vacation or have second homes in Canaan Valley. There are tons of things to do in the Valley. It's our favorite spot in WV.
Other cabins and places to rent can be found at: Timberline Realty http://www.timberlinerealty.com/ (or http://www.ridgeviewtechnologies.com/trr/)
