My question for you guys is this: if you had 5 days at the beginning of June to explore the Keys (ideally, fly into Miami and drive to Key West, but want to visit other places as well), what would be the places that you would recommend? Snorkeling at Looe (am I spelling that right?) and Bahia Honda National Park sound excellent, but I want to get other ideas as well. We're both into snorkeling, hanging out on the beach, and cultural and historical stuff. Also any cool places (meaning more B&Bs or smaller inns) to stay would be appreciated!

We live in FL so a trip to the Keys is not quite so exotic -- but what made my honeymoon special was the seaplane we took from Key West to the Dry Tortugas in the AM, returning later that day. The Tortugas are a small island west of Key West -- on it is a octagon-shaped old brick fort where they kept Dr. Mudd who treated John Wilkes Booth. I believe it's served other war purposes but now it's owned by the Nat'l. PS. You can take a picnic lunch, explore the fort, and there is some excellent snorkling. When I was there it was mating season for frigate birds, which is a time when they puff up their chests -- the birds like this particular island. The plane ride over the water, and the landing on the plane pontoons, was really fun.

You can also take other snorkle trips on catamaran sailboats.

As for a place to stay, that depends on your budget. It's hard to find a dump in the Keys (I'm sure someone will refute that...).

Think about spending a couple of nights at the Moorings in Islamorada. Lovely and secluded - you'll be able to relax after the wedding. You'll be next door to Cheeca if you want beach/pool/spa. Morada Bay and Pierre's restaurants are across the street. I've seen on this board that you can drive to KW, drop the rental car there and fly back economically. I would check that out as it will give you many extra hours of fun.

Kind of funny to hear cultural and historical in the same sentence with Key West. However, it is true, there are a lot of historical places in Key West.

Get a copy of The Florida Keys by Joy William. It is one of the best guidebooks ever written.

I agree that the Williams guide book is the best for the Keys.
The Last Train to Paradise by Les Standiford is a great book about Henry Flagler and the railroad he build from Miami to Key West. It was ultimately washed out by a hurricane and became the basis of the road we use today.
